Chapter 7 - The Reckoning of the Grant Empire

By nightfall, the town of Willow Ridge was buzzing like an overturned beehive.

The local news stations had caught wind of the spectacle: *ARMY COLONEL UNMASKS LOCAL SOCIALITE AS MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR FRAUD.* News vans were parked outside the police precinct where Olivia Grant sat in an orange jumpsuit, her designer veneer completely stripped away.

Inside the precinct’s interrogation room, Olivia sat across from two federal prosecutors and Agent Miller. The harsh fluorescent lights showed every line of terror on her unmade face.

"We have the bank transfers, Ms. Grant," the lead prosecutor said, tossing a stack of glossy documents onto the metal table. "You didn't just defraud the Vales. You took half a million dollars from the Municipal Pension Fund, which you had access to through your position on the town board."

Olivia stared at the table, her hands trembling so violently that the chain between her handcuffs rattled against the metal.

"It was Marcus’s idea," she choked out, trying desperately to find a life raft in the storm. "He told me his parents' house was going under! He said if I helped him create the illusion that I saved it, his father would sign over the family business stock to him early! He wanted the equity!"

Agent Miller leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. "That’s funny, Ms. Grant. Because Marcus is currently in an interview room two doors down, swearing under oath that you blackmailed him into the entire arrangement."

Olivia’s head snapped up, her eyes wide with shock and fury. "He said *what*?!"

"He says you promised him a partnership in your overseas real estate fund if he divorced his wife and secured custody of the Brooks trust funds," Miller continued, his voice cold and steady. "He called you a sociopath."

Olivia let out a high-pitched, hysterical laugh that sounded dangerously close to madness. "That coward! That pathetic, spineless coward! He begged me to help him! He hated her! He hated Amelia because she never asked him for money, because she made him feel small! He’s the one who wanted to take the baby boy just to hurt her!"

She leaned forward, slamming her cuffed hands onto the table.

"I have recordings! I recorded our phone calls! Every single one of them! In my cloud storage! I’ll give you the passwords! I’ll give you everything! Just don't send me to a federal prison! Please!"

Agent Miller exchanged a look with the prosecutor. He closed his folder.

"We already have your cloud storage, Ms. Grant. Colonel Brooks’s cyber intelligence unit cracked your encryption three hours ago. We didn't need your confession. We just wanted to see if you had any loyalty left in you."

Miller stood up, straightening his tie.

"You both deserve each other. And you’ll both have plenty of time to catch up in the federal penitentiary in Danbury."
