Chapter 3 - The Ghost Behind the LLC

"C-Colonel?" Robert Vale choked out, the word getting caught in his throat like a fishbone.

Marcus took an involuntary step backward, his eyes darting frantically from the twin silver eagles on Amelia’s shoulders to the rows of combat decorations, and finally to the babies sleeping peacefully against her chest.

"Amelia?" Marcus gasped, trying to find his voice, though it cracked pathetically. "What... what is this circus? What kind of sick game are you playing? You work in logistics! You’re an office temp!"

Amelia didn't raise her voice. She didn't have to. When she spoke, it carried the weight of someone used to directing airstrikes and commanding battalions.

"I run Special Operations Reconnaissance, Marcus. My life, my rank, and my assets have been classified under Level 5 Department of Defense clearances since before you bought me a cheap cubic zirconia and called it an engagement ring."

Olivia swallowed hard, stepping forward from behind Marcus. She tried to muster her usual socialite poise, flipping her blonde hair over her shoulder, though her lower lip was visibly quivering.

"I don't care what uniform you put on, Amelia," Olivia said, her voice shrill. "You can’t just bring soldiers onto private property! This is harassment! Marcus, tell her to leave! This is your parents' house!"

"Is it?"

The third man—the one in the tailored charcoal suit—stepped forward. He flipped open a leather wallet, displaying a gold badge.

"I am Special Agent Miller, United States Army Criminal Investigation Division, working in direct coordination with the Federal Financial Crimes Task Force. And you must be Olivia Grant."

Olivia blinked, the color rapidly fleeing her cheeks. "Yes. And I am the one who saved this estate from foreclosure. Robert and Helen know that. The whole town knows that! I paid the deed off!"

Agent Miller permitted himself a cold, humorless smile. He reached into his briefcase and pulled out a thick, bound folder sealed with a Department of Justice red ribbon.

"That’s interesting, Ms. Grant," Miller said, his voice ringing out across the crowd of stunned neighbors gathering along the perimeter tape. "Because according to the Middlesex County Land Records, as well as the wire transfers processed through J.P. Morgan Chase on the fourteenth of last month, the delinquent mortgage balance of four hundred and eighty-two thousand, six hundred and fourteen dollars was settled in full by a single entity."

Miller flipped the page open, turning it directly toward Robert and Helen Vale.

"The entity is *Aegis Strategic Holdings, LLC*," Agent Miller stated. "A blind blind trust registered in Delaware. And the sole signatory, sole beneficiary, and absolute owner of Aegis Holdings is Colonel Amelia Brooks. Funded entirely through her military service compensation, combat hazard stipends, and the estate of her late grandfather, General Arthur Brooks."

Robert Vale swayed on his feet, his jaw working silently. "No... no, Olivia said... Olivia said she wired the money from her family trust..."

"Ms. Grant couldn't have wired that money," Agent Miller interrupted smoothly. "Because as of three weeks ago, Ms. Grant’s accounts were frozen by the Securities and Exchange Commission for running a fraudulent real estate ponzi scheme in three counties."

A collective gasp swept through the guests on the porch.

Helen Vale turned on Olivia like a cornered animal. "Olivia? What is he talking about? You showed us the confirmation receipt! You showed Marcus the escrow letter!"

"A forged PDF," Amelia said, taking a measured step up the porch stairs. The Rangers flanking her moved in absolute, terrifying synchronicity, their rifles resting in low-ready positions. "Manufactured on a free online graphic design platform. You showed my in-laws a fake transaction receipt, Olivia, knowing that the bank had already ceased foreclosure proceedings because my wire had cleared twelve hours earlier. You swooped in, claimed the glory, and used the Vale name to solicit another two hundred thousand dollars from their country club friends to 'reinvest' in your fake fund."

Olivia’s chest heaved. "That's a lie! Marcus, he’s lying! She’s trying to destroy us because you left her!"

Marcus looked between Olivia’s panicking face and Amelia’s icy, unreadable eyes. The ground beneath his feet was no longer solid; it was turning into quicksand.

"Amelia..." Marcus began, his voice dropping into a pleading whisper. "Amelia, baby, listen... there’s been a misunderstanding. A terrible misunderstanding. Let’s go inside and talk about this like adults. The babies shouldn't be out in the cold—"

"Do not speak of my children," Amelia said. The words hit him like a physical blow. "You didn't care about their temperature when you abandoned them in Room 412. You didn't care about their health when you tossed divorce papers on my post-partum bed and told me you were going to rip my son from my arms like a piece of community property."

"I... I was angry! I was stressed about the business!" Marcus pleaded, taking a desperate step forward.

*Clack.*

Two Rangers instantly stepped between Marcus and Amelia, their boots slamming down in unison. The sound of their tactical plate carriers shifting was a sharp, brutal reminder of where the power lay.

"Step back, sir," the lead Sergeant barked, his eyes drilling through Marcus. "You are within the personal security perimeter of a commanding officer."

Marcus stumbled back, bumping into his father.

"Amelia," Helen sobbed, tears finally streaking through her expensive foundation. "Amelia, please! We didn't know! If we had known you were... you had... we would have treated you differently! You’re family!"

Amelia looked at Helen. For three years, this woman had made her wash the family dishes during Thanksgiving while Olivia sat in the parlor. For three years, Helen had criticized her plain clothes, mocked her quiet demeanor, and called her a "drain on Marcus’s potential."

"You didn't need to know I was a Colonel to treat me like a human being, Helen," Amelia said softly. "You only needed to have a soul. And clearly, that was too high a price for you to pay."
