Chapter 6 - Samuel’s Crumbling World

The heavy blue legal packet felt like burning lead in Gwendolyn’s hands as she finally dragged it inside and slammed the door shut.

She ripped open the front binding, her eyes frantically darting across the sharp, unforgiving legalese drafted by Arthur Vance.

Every single paragraph was a devastating blow against her fragile, manufactured reality.

The document detailed every violation with terrifying precision: the unauthorized attempts to dispossess the primary beneficiary, the failure to maintain the property taxes, the structural damage inflicted upon the historical plaster walls.

It outlined a formal demand for eighty-five thousand dollars in retroactive property taxes, deferred maintenance fees, and legal damages.

If the premises were not completely surrendered within thirty days, an immediate writ of restitution would be issued, authorizing county sheriffs to forcefully remove them and place their belongings on the sidewalk.

"Eighty-five thousand dollars?" Gwendolyn screeched, her voice trembling with an unhinged, feral panic.

"Where does she expect us to get eighty-five thousand dollars? We don't have eighty-five dollars in our savings account, Samuel!"

Samuel sat slumped on the dining room chair, his head resting in his palms, completely broken.

"I told you not to push her, Gwen," Samuel whimpered, his voice muffled by his hands. "I told you to keep the peace."

"Keep the peace?" Gwendolyn shrieked, lunging across the room and grabbing a decorative crystal bowl from the sideboard.

She hurled the crystal bowl against the brick fireplace, shattering it into a thousand glittering shards that rained down across the rug.

"You let me believe we were wealthy! You let me marry a pauper who doesn't even own the roof over his own head!"

"You are a coward, Samuel! A weak, pathetic, lying coward!"

Chloe was pacing back and forth across the foyer, her eyes wide with terror as she read the eviction notice over her mother’s shoulder.

"Mom, where are we going to live?" Chloe cried, her social media persona completely dissolved into desperate panic.

"All my friends think we live in a luxury mansion! If we get kicked out to some cheap apartment, my entire brand is dead!"

"Shut up about your stupid brand, Chloe!" Gwendolyn roared, turning her fury onto her own daughter.

"We are about to be homeless because your useless stepfather lied to us for a decade!"

Samuel slowly lifted his head, his face pale and eyes bloodshot with exhaustion and shame.

"Paige won't actually do it," Samuel muttered, clinging to a desperate, pathetic shred of hope. "She’s Eleanor's daughter. She has a soft heart."

"She wouldn't actually throw her own father onto the street. She’s just angry. She’s punishing us for last night."

"Then call her!" Gwendolyn commanded, thrusting Samuel’s smartphone directly into his face.

"Call your soft-hearted daughter right now, get down on your knees, and fix this disaster before our lives are completely destroyed!"

Samuel took the phone with trembling fingers, unlocking the screen and staring at Paige’s contact information.

For years, Paige had answered his calls on the first ring, always eager for a scrap of validation from the father who had neglected her.

Whenever he had called to ask for money, to ask for favors, or to tell her to stay in her room because Gwendolyn was having a party, she had complied.

He believed, with the pathetic arrogance of a weak man, that the invisible thread of bloodline loyalty would still bind her to his commands.

He pressed the call button, brought the phone to his ear, and listened to the hollow ringing sound.

One ring.

Two rings.

Three rings.

The call clicked, and Samuel’s heart leaped into his throat.

"Paige? Sweetheart?" Samuel rushed out, his voice cracked with desperate, artificial tenderness.

"This is the automated voicemail system for Paige Vance Miller," a smooth, recorded voice answered back.

"If you are calling regarding Vance Logistics or Miller Estate Holdings, please contact legal counsel directly."

"If you are calling from the North Phoenix residential property, be advised that all personal communications have been blocked."

"Refer all inquiries to Vance Legal Associates. Goodbye."

The mechanical disconnect tone sounded, sharp and cold, slicing right through the dead air of the living room.

Samuel slowly lowered the phone, his face completely devoid of hope.

"She blocked my number," Samuel whispered, the words sounding like a funeral dirge.

"She blocked my number entirely."
