Chapter 4 - The Influencer’s Reckless Destruction

By ten o'clock that morning, the suburban neighborhood of North Phoenix was basking beneath the fierce, unforgiving Arizona sun.

A massive, unmarked white moving truck pulled slowly up to the curb of my father’s house, its air brakes hissing with mechanical finality.

Four burly men dressed in black tactical uniforms stepped down from the cab, carrying industrial moving blankets, dollies, and clipboards.

The lead mover, a imposing former marine named Marcus, held a laminated copy of my ownership deed and an itemized manifest of Eleanor’s estate furniture.

Inside the house, Chloe was already in the middle of a live broadcast to her fifty thousand social media followers, showcasing her new "creative studio."

She had spent the early morning dragging her cheap fast-fashion clothes, makeup mirrors, and neon lighting rigs into my mother's carefully designed suite.

"Hey guys, welcome to my brand new luxury creator space!" Chloe squealed into her smartphone camera, spinning around in the sunlight.

"We finally got rid of the negative energy in this house, and now this entire aesthetic belongs to me!"

She had already taken down the soft, cream-colored linen draperies Eleanor had sewn by hand, throwing them into a crumpled heap on the floor.

On the wall, she had hammered multiple crude, uneven nails into the custom Venetian plaster to hang garish acrylic signs spelling out her handle.

Downstairs, Gwendolyn was standing in the kitchen, sipping an iced latte while flipping through an interior design catalog, contemplating further remodeling.

The violent, authoritative pounding on the heavy front door shattered the morning peace, echoing through the foyer like artillery fire.

Gwendolyn frowned, setting her coffee down with an irritated scoff before marching toward the entryway.

"Samuel! Did you order something heavy from the hardware store?" she yelled toward the garage, receiving no reply.

She pulled the front door open, preparing to berate whoever had dared knock so aggressively on her door.

Instead, she was greeted by the towering frame of Marcus, whose impassive, hardened face offered not a flicker of warmth.

"Good morning, ma'am," Marcus said, his voice flat, low, and unmistakable in its authority.

"I am the operations director for Valley Heritage Logistics."

"We are here under direct contract with the sole property owner, Paige Miller, to extract, wrap, and transport all primary suite furnishings."

Gwendolyn stared at him, her jaw dropping open in a mixture of profound shock and rising indignation.

"What did you just say?" Gwendolyn gasped, clutching the collar of her silk blouse. "Who told you to come here?"

"The legal owner of this real estate, Paige Miller," Marcus repeated, holding up the laminated Maricopa County deed registry.

"We have an itemized inventory of fourteen specific high-value assets located inside the second-floor master suite."

"Any attempt to obstruct the recovery of these titled personal assets will result in an immediate call to the Phoenix Police Department."

Before Gwendolyn could process the words, Marcus stepped smoothly past her into the foyer, followed by three massive movers carrying heavy dollies.

"Wait! Stop! You cannot just barge into my private home!" Gwendolyn shrieked, her voice reaching a shrill, hysterical pitch.

She lunged forward to grab Marcus’s arm, but he effortlessly bypassed her, moving toward the staircase with robotic determination.

Upstairs, Chloe came rushing out onto the landing, clutching her phone on live stream as the sound of heavy boots ascended the stairs.

"Mom! What is happening? Who are these massive men coming up my stairs?" Chloe cried, backing away toward the bedroom door.

Marcus reached the top of the landing, glanced down at his clipboard, and immediately activated his chest-mounted body camera.

"Miss, you need to clear the doorway immediately," Marcus instructed, his voice brook no argument.

"We are here to clear the master bedframe, the Lyon armoire, the matching end tables, and the executive desk."

"You have five minutes to remove any personal clothing items placed on top of those assets, or they will be bagged and left in the hallway."

Chloe’s face turned bright red with utter fury as she aimed her camera directly into Marcus’s emotionless face.

"Do you have any idea who I am?" Chloe screamed, stamping her foot on the hardwood floor. "This is my room! My mother gave it to me last night!"

"I don't know who your mother is, miss," Marcus replied, gesturing to his team. "But Paige Miller owns these furnishings and this house."

"Team, begin wrapping the Lyon armoire; ensure all corner guards are secured before descent."

Within seconds, the moving crew swept into the room like a well-oiled machine, completely ignoring Chloe’s frantic, screeching protests.

They unbolted the magnificent mahogany headboard Eleanor had loved, wrapping it in thick layers of protective quilted blankets and heavy plastic.

They methodically removed the drawers of the French desk, sliding the precious antique wood into padded crates with extreme care.

Chloe stood in the center of the hallway, hysterically filming the process, completely unaware that her live stream was capturing her own public humiliation.

Downstairs, Gwendolyn was frantically dialing Samuel’s cell phone, her manicured fingers trembling with unprecedented rage.

"Samuel! Get your useless rear end in here right now!" Gwendolyn screamed the second the call connected.

"Your sociopathic daughter has sent a gang of thugs into my house to rob us in broad daylight!"

Samuel stumbled into the house from the backyard shed, wiping grease from his hands onto an old rag, looking completely bewildered.

"Gwen, what on earth is all this yelling about?" Samuel asked, his eyes widening as two movers carried Eleanor's mahogany headboard down the staircase.

"Hey! What are you doing with Eleanor's furniture?" Samuel blurted out, stepping into the path of the movers.

Marcus stepped down from the landing, towering over my father with the laminated legal document extended forward.

"Mr. Samuel Miller?" Marcus inquired sharply.

"Yes, I am Samuel Miller, and I demand to know what gives you the right to loot my home!" Samuel bellowed, attempting to summon an authority he did not possess.

"This document gives us the right, sir," Marcus stated calmly, pointing directly to the official red seal of the Maricopa County recorder.

"Your daughter, Paige Miller, is the registered fee-simple owner of this property and all specified estate furnishings within it."

"She has revoked your authorization to utilize or possess these specific historical assets."

"If you touch my crew again, Mr. Miller, I will have the dispatch office contact the precinct commander, and you will be arrested for interfering with legal repossession."

Samuel stared at the paper, and the little color remaining in his weathered face drained away until he resembled a walking corpse.

He recognized the official county seal, he recognized Eleanor's family trust designation, and he recognized the cold, undeniable signature of Arthur Vance.

The secret he had desperately tried to bury for nine years had just burst through the surface like an unexploded bomb detonating at his feet.

"Samuel?" Gwendolyn demanded, her voice dropping into a dangerous, suspicious growl as she noticed the terror in her husband's eyes.

"Why are you looking at that paper like that? Call the police! Tell them to throw these criminals out of our house!"

Samuel’s mouth opened and closed like a fish suffocating on dry land, but not a single sound emerged from his throat.

"Samuel!" Gwendolyn shrieked, grabbing his shoulder and shaking him violently. "Who owns this house?"

Before Samuel could formulate a lie, Marcus’s team carried the final crated desk through the front door, leaving the upstairs suite completely empty.

The grand room that Chloe had intended to use as her glamorous influencer studio was now nothing more than a hollow cavern of bare floorboards and stripped walls.

Marcus stopped at the threshold, turned around, and looked at the dysfunctional trio standing in the ruined entryway.

"The extraction of client assets is complete," Marcus announced, clicking off his body camera with a sharp beep.

"Have a wonderful afternoon, ladies and gentlemen."

The front door shut with a heavy, definitive click, leaving a terrifying, suffocating silence in its wake.
