Chapter 46 - The Manhattan Retribution

The digital screens on Frank’s monitors flickered with cascading waterfalls of red numbers.
"The Aldrich Capital liquidation isn't going through normal bankruptcy channels," Frank reported, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard. "Someone triggered a panic fire-sale of Julian’s secondary portfolios. Over forty billion dollars in distressed shipping bonds are being dumped onto the open market right now!"
"Who authorized the dump?" I demanded, leaning over his shoulder.
"A proxy entity registered under the name *Vanguard Maritima*," Frank said grimly. "It’s an offshore ghost shell based out of Zurich, managed by an anonymous board. They're deliberately crashing the valuation of the Wilmington Port Authority. If the stock drops below four dollars a share by the closing bell in Manhattan, a forced foreclosure clause kicks in. The entire Delaware riverfront will be seized by creditors in three hours!"
"Julian's last trap," Clara gasped, staring at the ticker. "He set an automated dead-man’s trigger. Even from the grave, he's trying to destroy Berth 4!"
"He thought we wouldn't have the counter-ledger," I said calmly.
I reached out and extracted the gold-and-cobalt quantum drive from the silver cylinder. I inserted it directly into the encrypted terminal’s auxiliary bay.
The screen flashed once, turning blinding white, before an archaic prompt appeared in bold black lettering:
**THE LEAGUE OF 1994 — SOVEREIGN OVERRIDE CONFIRMED.**
**WELCOME, FOUNDER ARTHUR VANCE.**
"Frank, patch me through to the Chief Executive of the Federal Reserve and the Chairman of the Zurich Exchange. Route the call through the League’s private transatlantic fiber cable."
"Lines secured, Boss," Frank said, handing me the headset.
I waited three seconds. When the line clicked, a voice choked with panic answered: *"Who is this? How are you broadcasting on the Tier-Zero emergency frequency?"*
"This is Arthur Vance," I spoke with absolute, merciless authority. "Cancel the automated margin calls on the Wilmington Port Authority bonds immediately. Release liquidity buffer Alpha-Seven from the Zurich depository to absorb the entire short position of Vanguard Maritima."
A stunned silence echoed over the line. *"M-Mr. Vance? The records show your accounts were dissolved thirty years ago..."*
"Look at your central server, Chairman," I commanded.
A keystroke sounded on the other end, followed by an audible gasp of sheer horror. *"My God... the Sovereign Reserve is active. The funds... sixty-two billion dollars just posted to the clearing house."*
"Buy every single share of Wilmington Port stock dumped by Aldrich Capital," I said. "Drive the price back to its historical high. And bankrupt Vanguard Maritima by the time the closing bell rings in New York."
*"Consider it done, sir."*

I cut the call. Clara let out a long, shaky breath, leaning against the mahogany table. "Did we do it? Is Berth 4 saved?"
"Berth 4 is protected," I said, looking back out toward the lake. "But Vanguard Maritima’s headquarters isn't in Delaware. It’s right here in Zurich. Just four miles from this house."
