Chapter 40 - The Final Heir

The words hung in the subterranean vault like poison gas.
*“You are not Arthur’s child.”*
Clara froze. The color completely drained from her face, leaving her as pale as the marble beneath our feet. Her eyes widened in absolute shock, her lips parting, unable to produce a single sound.
"What... what did she say?" Clara whispered, turning to me with a look of utter, soul-shattering devastation. "Dad... what is she saying?"
My heart stopped. For thirty years, I had commanded fleets, outmaneuvered billionaires, survived dockland wars and federal raids without my pulse wavering by a single beat.
Now, standing five feet from the woman I had loved my entire life, the ground gave way beneath my soul.
"Sarah..." I whispered, my voice shaking uncontrollably. "Sarah, what are you talking about?"
Walter Sterling’s laughter was quiet, cruel, and absolute.
"Tell him, Sarah," Sterling murmured, his eyes fixed on me with supreme triumph. "Tell him who Clara’s father really is."
Sarah wept, her chest heaving violently beneath the sterile sheets as the heart monitor’s beeping spiked into an erratic, frantic rhythm: 140... 150... 160 beats per minute.
"Arthur..." Sarah gasped through the plastic mask, her tears running into her silver-streaked hair. "In ninety-eight... Marcus Aldrich had Walter kidnap me before Clara was born... they altered the clinic records... Marcus forced the insemination to steal your bloodline... Clara is... Clara is Marcus Aldrich’s biological daughter!"
Clara let out a strangled, horrified scream, stumbling backward into Frank’s heavy arms. "No! No! That’s a lie! That’s an impossible lie!"
On the floor against the pedestal, bleeding from his shoulder, Julian Aldrich looked up through the blood and sweat on his face. His mouth twisted into a grotesque, hysterical grin.
"She’s... my sister?" Julian wheezed, laughing like a madman through his bloody teeth. "She’s my sister! You married me to my own half-sister, you monsters!"
"Shut up, Julian!" Frank roared, his face black with rage.
"It doesn't matter who she married," Sterling said, his eyes gleaming with absolute, venomous satisfaction. "Because under the 1994 League Charter inside this safe, if Arthur Vance has no biological child, the entire Vance trust is null and void! Clara cannot inherit! Arthur has no legal heir!"
Sterling slammed his hand down onto the biometric activation console of the brass safe.
A deep mechanical click echoed from within the iron box. The antique gears whirred, and the heavy lid of the second safe slowly swung open.
Inside, resting on black velvet, was not just the 1994 covenant.
Lying beside the yellowed parchment was an antique silver cylinder—and a live digital countdown display, glowing with bright crimson LED numbers, wired directly to three blocks of military-grade Semtex explosive packed into the base of the safe.
The timer was running: **00:01:45... 00:01:44... 00:01:43...**
"Did you really think I would leave my life’s work to the whims of a Swiss court, Arthur?" Sterling whispered, backing swiftly toward the vault’s emergency blast chute on the far wall. "If I don't leave this vault with the covenant, no one leaves. This room will be sealed under three thousand tons of alpine bedrock in ninety seconds."
Suddenly, the heavy iron blast doors of Vault 714 behind us slammed shut with a deafening, hydraulic clang.
*CLANK-SHUT.*
The emergency security klaxons began to wail, a shrill, deafening scream that shook the dust from the ceiling. The electronic seals engaged, locking us inside.
"Arthur!" Frank yelled, lunging toward the door controls, hammering on the override panel. "The main door is dead! Sterling triggered the exterior lockdown!"
On the gurney, Sarah’s monitor flatlined into a continuous, piercing shriek:
*BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP.*
"Mom!" Clara screamed, breaking away from Frank, throwing herself across Sarah’s motionless body. "Mom! Wake up! Please, Mom!"
Across the room, behind the reinforced bulletproof glass of the emergency exit hatch, Walter Sterling smiled one last time as the hydraulic gate began to slide down, sealing his escape.
On the pedestal, the digital timer on the Semtex clicked down:
**00:00:58... 00:00:57... 00:00:56...**
And on the floor, bleeding from his chest, Julian Aldrich reached into his torn pocket, pulling out a small black remote detonator with a trembling, bloody hand, his thumb hovering over the red button.
"If I'm going down, old man," Julian whispered with his dying breath, his eyes wide with madness, "we all burn together."
May you like
"Julian, don't!" I shouted, raising my gun—
Julian pressed the switch.
