Chapter 5 - A Mother’s Ultimatum

The convoy arrived with military precision. Six black Suburbans and four unmarked sedans roared up the winding driveway, their tires kicking up gravel, blue and red emergency strobes cutting through the weeping willows.

Inside the study, utter chaos erupted.

“Get the offshore drives!” Eleanor shrieked, her composed facade completely disintegrating. She grabbed Logan’s arm, her fingernails digging through his designer sweater. “Logan, erase the cloud backups! Do it now!”

“It’s too late, Mom!” Logan panicked, sweating profusely, dropping his phone twice as his hands shook. “If the feds are here, they already seized the cloud servers!”

The front doors of the estate were breached without hesitation. Armed federal agents in tactical gear with yellow letters reading **FBI** and **IRS-CI** filed into the grand foyer, their boots echoing across the marble that had witnessed my humiliation less than twelve hours earlier.

Agent Marcus Vance walked through the doorway, holding a federal search warrant in one gloved hand. Behind him, two dozen agents began fanning out into every wing of the estate, carrying empty evidence boxes.

“Arthur Devereux! Logan Devereux!” Vance’s voice echoed like thunder through the vaulted ceilings.

Arthur stepped into the foyer, his chin lifted in an attempt to project authority, though the tremor in his hands betrayed him. “Do you have any idea who I am, Agent? I have the Attorney General’s personal cell phone on speed dial. You step out of my house this instant before I end your career!”

Vance didn’t even blink. He didn’t raise his voice. He simply stepped forward, unfurling the warrant.

“Arthur Devereux, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, money laundering, and operating an unlawful enterprise. Logan Devereux, you are under arrest for forty-two counts of bank fraud and securities violations.”

Two agents moved swiftly past Arthur, catching Logan by the elbows, forcing him against the marble balustrade, and cuffing his wrists behind his back with loud, metallic clicks.

“Hey! Get your hands off me!” Logan screamed, his voice cracking into a high-pitched wail. “Dad! Do something! Mom!”

Eleanor rushed forward, her eyes wild, her hair unkempt. “You animals! You cannot treat my son like this! Where did you get this ridiculous nonsense? Who told you these lies?”

Vance looked at Eleanor, his face carved from granite.

“Your daughter Claire sends her regards, Mrs. Devereux.”

The name hit Eleanor like a physical blow. She staggered backward, her mouth hanging open in horror, her hands trembling against her chest.

“Claire?” Eleanor choked out. “She… she wouldn’t. She doesn’t have the stomach for this.”

“She had the stomach to copy your entire financial history,” Vance said quietly as agents began ripping Arthur’s safe from the wall and carting out boxes of sealed documents. “And unlike the people in this room, she actually understands how the law works.”

As Logan was dragged out the front doors, weeping uncontrollably while television helicopters began hovering overhead, Eleanor fell to her knees on the cold marble floor.

The kingdom had fallen. And the girl they slapped was the one holding the torch.
