Chapter 4 - The Golden Boy’s Blindspot

By 9:00 AM the following morning, the Devereux mansion was slowly shaking off the remnants of the holiday feast. Caterers cleared away crystal flutes while Logan Devereux lounged in his father’s study, feet propped up on the mahogany desk, a celebratory cigar rolling between his fingers.
Arthur Devereux walked into the room, holding the morning edition of the *Wall Street Journal*.
“Did your sister call to apologize yet?” Arthur asked, pouring himself a mineral water.
“Please,” Logan sneered, puffing smoke toward the ceiling. “She’s probably living out of her car. She has no money, no connections, and no spine. That slap woke her up. She’ll come crawling back by Monday begging for her allowance.”
Arthur gave a thin, approving nod. “Good. We cannot afford distractions. The SEC inquiry into our Cayman logistics partner was supposed to conclude this week. Our lobbyists assured me it was merely routine paperwork.”
The door opened, and Eleanor entered, wearing cashmere loungewear, looking immaculate. “Arthur, darling, did you change the authorization codes on the Foundation’s primary treasury portal? I tried to authorize the deposit for the New York Gala venue, and the system returned an error code.”
Arthur frowned, setting his glass down. “No. I haven’t touched the portal since Wednesday.”
Logan chuckled. “It’s probably just server maintenance, Mom. It’s the day after Thanksgiving.”
Before Eleanor could reply, Arthur’s private cell phone began to vibrate violently against the desk. The caller ID flashed: *Julian Croft — Lead General Counsel*.
Arthur pressed speakerphone. “Julian. I hope you aren’t calling to complain about your holiday bonus.”
*“Arthur, where are you right now?”* Julian’s voice wasn't its usual measured, Ivy-League baritone. It was shrill, breathy, and dripping with raw terror.
Arthur’s spine stiffened. “I’m in Greenwich. What is the meaning of this?”
*“Turn on the television. Any financial channel. Right now.”*
Logan grabbed the remote and flicked on CNBC.
The screen immediately cut to a breaking news banner: **DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE UNSEALS 42-COUNT INDICTMENT AGAINST DEVEREUX GLOBAL FOUNDATION; ARREST WARRANTS ISSUED.**
The anchor’s voice rang through the quiet study like a funeral bell: *“Federal prosecutors from the Southern District of New York, alongside IRS Criminal Investigation agents, have frozen all domestic and international assets belonging to Arthur and Logan Devereux following an explosive multi-year forensic investigation into charitable embezzlement exceeding one hundred and eighty million dollars…”*
The cigar slipped from Logan’s fingers, tumbling onto the hand-woven Persian rug.
“What… what is this?” Logan stammered, his face draining of all color until he looked like a corpse. “Dad? What the hell is this?”
*“Arthur!”* Julian screamed through the phone. *“They have internal ledger numbers! They have SWIFT transaction confirmations down to the exact second! They have your encrypted off-book invoices! Someone handed them the entire vault!”*
Eleanor gasped, clutching her throat. “That’s impossible! Those files were locked in your personal biometric safe at the Manhattan office!”
Arthur didn’t answer. His cold, calculating eyes slowly shifted to the corner of the desk where an empty leather-bound folder holder sat. A memory struck him—Claire standing quietly near his desk two weeks ago while Eleanor berated her about Thanksgiving dinner.
“Claire,” Arthur whispered, the word tasting like ash in his mouth.

Before anyone could move, the heavy iron gates of the estate were shattered by the sound of approaching sirens.
