Chapter 30 - The Woman in the Glass

The glass pod opened.

Cold vapor spilled across the floor.

The young woman stepped out.

She looked exactly like me at twenty-four.

Not Emily.

Not the other Elena.

Me.

A version of me from before I had ever met Michael.

Before the fire.

Before marriage.

Before motherhood.

Before I knew the word Mirror Zero.

She looked around.

Then saw Michael.

Tears filled her eyes.

“You came back.”

Michael stared at her.

“I thought you were dead.”

She smiled.

“They wanted you to think that.”

I stepped between them.

“Who are you?”

She looked at me.

“I'm Elena.”

The words were unbearable.

The other Elena stepped beside me.

“No.”

The young woman smiled.

“You're the transfer six.”

My heart stopped.

“How do you know?”

“Because I watched it happen.”

Michael looked toward her.

“You were conscious?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“All the time.”

She looked at the servers.

“They couldn't erase me.”

Evelyn wheeled herself closer.

“This is not what was supposed to happen.”

The young Elena laughed.

“That’s what you always say.”

Evelyn stared at her.

“You were meant to remain dormant.”

“You built me to remember.”

“Yes.”

“You forgot the first rule.”

“What rule?”

“Memory is not obedience.”

Victoria moved toward the young Elena.

“Why do you look like her?”

The woman looked at me.

“Because she was created from me.”

I felt the air leave my lungs.

Michael whispered:

“She was the source.”

The woman nodded.

“I was the original transfer.”

I looked at Evelyn.

“Then who am I?”

Evelyn looked at me.

“The successful version.”

The young Elena shook her head.

“No.”

She looked directly at me.

“You are the version that survived.”

The distinction mattered.

I looked at Emily.

She was staring at the young woman.

The same way children stare at photographs of themselves.

“Are you my mother?”

The woman knelt.

“No.”

Emily frowned.

“But you look like her.”

“I am part of her.”

She touched Emily's cheek.

“And you are part of me.”

Emily stepped back.

Michael intervened.

“Don't touch her.”

The woman looked at him.

“You still think protecting them means hiding things.”

Michael's face hardened.

“You don't know what I did.”

“I know everything you did.”

Her eyes shifted toward me.

“You signed the first authorization.”

Michael looked away.

“You lied about the fire.”

He didn't answer.

“You let her believe you were dead.”

“I was trying to keep her alive.”

“You always say that.”

She looked at me.

“And you always believed him.”

I shook my head.

“Not anymore.”

The young Elena smiled.

“Good.”

A siren screamed outside.

Reyes looked through the broken window.

“Vale is moving in.”

David checked his weapon.

“We have maybe two minutes.”

Michael went to the server.

“I can stop the synchronization.”

“How?”

“Inside.”

He opened a small access port.

The other Elena caught his arm.

“You'll be trapped.”

“I know.”

I grabbed him.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“We don't have a choice.”

“I just got you back.”

His expression broke.

“You never lost me.”

“I buried you.”

“I know.”

“You watched our daughter grow.”

“I know.”

“You let me think I was alone.”

“I know.”

I shook my head.

“You don't get to decide for me again.”

He stared at me.

“What are you saying?”

“I'm going with you.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“You could lose your memory.”

“I've already lost enough.”

Emily grabbed my coat.

“Mom.”

I knelt.

“Listen to me.”

“No.”

“I have to do this.”

“No.”

Her face crumpled.

“You promised.”

I touched her face.

“I promised I would stay.”

Michael knelt beside us.

“And I will.”

Emily looked at both of us.

Then she pulled the memory card from her pocket.

I stared.

“Emily.”

“I know what this is.”

Michael looked at her.

“How?”

She touched her temple.

“Because I remember.”

The bracelet flashed.

The servers screamed.

The synchronization counter hit:

00:10

Everyone froze.

“What happens at zero?” Reyes asked.

The other Elena answered:

“The archive chooses.”

“Chooses what?”

“Which reality survives.”

The counter changed.

00:09.

Vale's voice came through the speakers.

“You don't have to lose anyone.”

His image appeared.

“You only have to choose.”

I shouted toward the camera.

“Choose what?”

He smiled.

“Your husband.”

Michael looked at the screen.

Vale continued.

“One Elena.”

“The other Elena.”

“Or your daughter.”

Emily stepped backward.

“No.”

Vale smiled.

“Three lives.”

“One system.”

“One choice.”

The counter reached five.

Evelyn started crying.

Thomas appeared on another screen.

“Don't choose.”

I looked at my father.

“Then what do I do?”

He whispered:

“Break the rules.”

Four.

Victoria stepped forward.

“How?”

Thomas looked at her.

“Remember who you were.”

She shook her head.

“I was Victoria.”

“No.”

He pointed toward the young Elena.

“You were the one who refused to disappear.”

Victoria closed her eyes.

Something changed in her face.

She reached for the console.

Three.

Michael shouted:

“Victoria, don't!”

Two.

She pressed her palm against the interface.

The entire system screamed.

One.

The house went dark.

Then every screen came alive at once.

Not with Vale.

Not with Thomas.

Not with the archive.

With millions of names.

Millions of faces.

Millions of memories.

The network was no longer hidden.

Every altered identity was broadcasting.

Every forged record.

Every buried marriage.

Every false death.

Every child.

Every stolen inheritance.

Every erased witness.

All of it.

Public.

Vale screamed over the speakers.

“You have no idea what you've done!”

Victoria looked at me.

“Yes.”

She smiled.

“For the first time, we do.”

Then another face appeared on the largest screen.

A man I had never seen.

Older than Evelyn.

Older than Thomas.

Wearing a simple black suit.

He looked directly into the camera.

“I wondered when you would finally open the archive.”

Evelyn stopped breathing.

“That's impossible.”

Michael stared.

“Who is that?”

Evelyn whispered his name.

“Jonathan.”

Thomas looked terrified.

“My father.”

Jonathan smiled.

“The network was never inherited from me.”

He leaned closer to the camera.

“It began long before the Harts.”

His eyes settled on Emily.

“And now the final bloodline has been found.”

The screen went black.

Then a message appeared.

NEXT PHASE: ORIGIN.

Michael looked at me.

I looked at Emily.

May you like

Victoria looked at Sarah.

And somewhere beneath the house, another machine began to power on.
