Chapter 22 - My Husband’s Voice

The lift dropped so fast my stomach turned.

Emily held onto me.

Victoria stood opposite us, silent.

Reyes braced himself against the wall.

David kept staring at the floor indicator.

There were no numbers.

Only names.

SARAH.

VICTORIA.

THOMAS.

ELENA.

Then:

MICHAEL.

The display stopped.

The doors opened.

A hospital corridor stretched ahead.

I stopped breathing.

White walls.

Steel doors.

Old green exit signs.

The same narrow windows.

The same fluorescent fixtures.

The same faint antiseptic smell.

It was the hospital from the fire.

The night Michael died.

Emily squeezed my hand.

“Mom, what is this?”

“I don't know.”

Victoria whispered, “You do.”

I looked at her.

She touched the wall.

“You've been here before.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

She pointed to a door at the end.

ROOM 417.

I remembered.

The room where Michael had been taken after the explosion.

The room I had been forbidden to enter.

The room where a nurse told me he hadn't survived.

I walked toward it.

David grabbed my wrist.

“Don't.”

I pulled free.

“You don't get to tell me what to do anymore.”

The door opened before I touched it.

A monitor inside came alive.

A recording appeared.

Michael sat on a hospital bed.

His face was swollen.

One eye was black.

An IV ran into his arm.

I moved closer.

“This is real.”

The recording date appeared.

September 14.

Twelve years earlier.

Michael looked into the camera.

“If you're seeing this, they succeeded.”

I covered my mouth.

He continued.

“Not with the fire.”

He leaned forward.

“With the identity transfer.”

Victoria stood beside me.

“What identity transfer?”

Michael answered from the screen.

“They didn't replace Elena.”

My heart stopped.

“They replaced me.”

David closed his eyes.

I stared at him.

Michael continued.

“They wanted me to become Thomas Hart.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

The recording kept going.

“I spent two years building their security systems. I thought I was helping protect classified witnesses. Then I discovered the names weren't witnesses.”

The screen filled with records.

Thousands of people.

“Families,” Michael said.

“Children. Judges. soldiers. scientists. spouses.”

He paused.

“They were being rewritten.”

I felt Emily move closer to me.

Michael looked directly into the camera.

“If they ever come after Elena, don't let her trust the first version of me she sees.”

I turned to David.

“What does that mean?”

He didn't speak.

Victoria did.

“It means there may be more than one Michael.”

The lights went out.

A door slammed somewhere behind us.

Emily screamed.

Reyes raised his weapon.

“Movement!”

Footsteps.

One set.

Then two.

Then five.

David stepped in front of me.

“I don't want anyone firing unless I give the order.”

The corridor lights returned.

At the far end stood a man.

Michael.

The real Michael.

Older.

Thinner.

A scar across his cheek.

His hands were raised.

Elena.

I couldn't move.

He walked toward me.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like he knew one wrong step would destroy everything.

“Don't come closer.”

He stopped.

Emily stared at him.

“Are you my dad?”

Michael looked at her.

Tears filled his eyes.

“Yes.”

Her face collapsed.

“You died.”

“I know.”

“Mom said you died.”

“I know.”

“Why did you leave?”

Michael looked at me.

“She was safer without me.”

I laughed through tears.

“Was she?”

He flinched.

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“You watched us.”

“I watched every day.”

“You watched Emily grow up.”

“Yes.”

“You watched me cry.”

“Yes.”

“You watched me bury you.”

He looked down.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He finally answered.

“Because the first time I came back, they took your mother.”

Sarah stepped forward.

“You should have told her.”

Michael looked at her.

“You knew too.”

Sarah started crying.

“I had no choice.”

Michael laughed once, without humor.

“None of us did.”

Victoria moved between them.

“You said Thomas wasn't the first.”

Michael's face went still.

“No.”

“Who was?”

Michael looked at me.

“You.”

I felt my entire body go cold.

“What?”

“The first successful transfer was performed on you.”

Emily shook her head.

“That’s impossible.”

Michael knelt so he was eye level with her.

“When you were six.”

I remembered nothing.

Michael touched his scar.

“They erased that year.”

David stepped forward.

“And the memory card?”

Michael looked at him.

“That wasn't a recording.”

He looked at me.

“It was a recovery key.”

Everything inside me shifted.

Emily reached into her jacket and pulled out the memory card.

Michael stared at it.

“Give me that.”

I stepped between them.

“Why?”

“Because if it’s still intact, they can find you.”

Victoria looked at the card.

“No.”

Michael's voice hardened.

“You don't understand.”

She shook her head.

“I understand perfectly.”

She held up her wrist.

The bracelet.

The same one Emily had worn.

“It's already awake.”

The bracelet began to glow.

The entire corridor shook.

A voice came through the speakers.

“Primary subject located.”

Michael looked terrified.

“Get Emily out.”

The doors at both ends of the corridor locked.

Reyes turned to me.

“We're trapped.”

Michael reached for my hand.

“Not trapped.”

He looked at the floor.

“Contained.”

Then the wall behind us opened.

Dozens of surveillance screens came alive at once.

Each one showed a different family.

A different city.

A different woman.

All wearing faces that looked like mine.

May you like

And on every screen, the same sentence appeared.

SUBJECT ELENA HART: RECOVERY PHASE INITIATED.
