Chapter 5 - The Web Behind the Betrayal

Olga stood by the door, watching the brother and sister tear into each other. But as she listened, a cold, sharp realization pierced through the fog of anger.

“How did you get my passport, Nina?” Olga asked. Her voice wasn’t loud, but it cut through Nina’s screaming like a scalpel through soft flesh.

Both Igor and Nina went completely silent.

Olga walked over to the desk, her eyes fixed entirely on Nina. “My passport was in our locked nightstand. The only key is on Igor’s key ring. And to withdraw cash at the central branch, you needed the security answer to the mother’s maiden name. I never told you my mother’s maiden name. My mother died when I was twelve in Vladivostok. We never talked about her.”

Nina’s eyes darted nervously toward Igor.

Igor didn't move. He stood completely still by the wardrobe, his head bowed, the Scandinavian mink brushing against his canvas shoulder.

“Igor?” Olga whispered, the blood roaring in her ears. “How did she get my passport?”

Igor didn't look up. He looked at his own boots, at the slush melting on the dirty floorboards. “She... she said she needed an ID to register Artem for the district clinic subsidy. She said her own passport was being renewed at the migration office.”

“And you gave her mine?” Olga felt her breath catch in her throat. “You took my passport out of my private drawer without telling me, and handed it to your sister?”

“She told me it was just for the clinic!” Igor pleaded, his eyes wild with terror as he turned back to Olga. “She swore on Artem’s life! She said she’d bring it back the next day! I put it back in the drawer this morning before I went to work! I didn't know she was going to the bank! I swear to God, Olga, I didn't know!”

“And the security question?” Olga took a step toward him, her hands trembling with an uncontrollable rage. “My mother’s maiden name. Who told her that?”

Igor flinched as if struck across the face. “She asked me... last month. When we were filling out the loan pre-approval forms. She was helping me organize the paperwork. She asked what the security phrases were in case the bank called to verify our family income. I didn't think... I didn't realize...”

“You gave her the keys to our entire life,” Olga said. Her voice dropped to a level so calm, so devoid of emotion, that it was terrifying. “You gave her the keys, you opened the door, and then when the house was robbed, you came home and put your hands around my throat.”

“I didn't know!” Igor dropped to his knees right there in the middle of the crowded communal room, grabbing at the hem of Olga’s worn jacket. “Olga, please! I was blind! I was so tired, I couldn't think straight! When Nina showed me that receipt, it broke my brain! I couldn't breathe! I thought you had abandoned me!”

“Get up,” Olga said, pulling her coat from his grasp with such force that his hands slipped against the floorboards. “Get up off your knees. You look pathetic.”

Nina sneered from the corner, watching her brother grovel. “Look at you, Igor. Begging a woman who doesn't even have a drop of family loyalty in her. Let her go! We have the money. We can sell the coat tomorrow. We’ll take Artem and Mama to the south. We can start fresh without her!”

“Shut up, Nina!” Igor screamed, turning on her with a fury that made her jump back. “Shut your mouth! You destroyed me! You stole my life!”

“No, Igor,” Olga said, reaching into her pocket and pulling out her phone. “She didn't destroy your life. You did. The moment you decided that your loyalty to your toxic family was worth more than your respect for your wife.”
