Chapter 10 - The Sovereign’s Choice

The heavy iron handcuffs clicked shut around Chad Harrington’s wrists, the sound ringing through the massive hall like a gavel signaling the end of an era. Brooke’s frantic wails echoed down the grand corridor, fading into the cold, rainy night outside as the police cruisers sped away, their red and blue sirens painting the ballroom's towering windows.

The ballroom was as silent as a graveyard.

Five hundred of Manhattan’s most powerful figures remained frozen in their seats, their champagne flat, their wagyu cold. The hedge fund managers, the socialites who had laughed at Ethan’s stained clothes, the board members who had plotted his demise—all of them sat with bowed heads, terrified to meet the gaze of the titan standing upon the dais.

Ethan Vance stood at the center of the stage. He adjusted his silver cufflinks, looking across the sea of cowardly faces.

"The Vance Foundation will continue," Ethan announced, his voice carrying the calm authority of an absolute monarch. "However, every single individual who voted to liquidate my assets, and every investor who cheered for Chad Harrington tonight, has twenty-four hours to divest their interests in my network. If you do not, I will personally short your firms into bankruptcy by the close of business tomorrow."

Several men gasped, clutching their chests, while others immediately grabbed their phones to call their brokers in a frenzy of panic.

Ethan did not wait to watch them squirm. He walked down the center aisle, the crowd parting like the Red Sea before him, whispering prayers of gratitude that his wrath had not fallen directly upon their heads.

He stopped in front of the auxiliary table in the dim corner.

There stood Isabella, still holding her silver paddle, her eyes wide as she looked at him.

"Mr. Vance," she said softly, her voice trembling slightly. "You... you were never broken."

"My body was never broken, Isabella," Ethan said, his sharp features softening into a genuine, warm expression that none of the billionaires in the room had ever seen. "Only my trust in people."

Ethan extended his hand to her. Not as a master to a servant, but as an equal.

"Tonight, five hundred people in couture gowns and million-dollar jewelry showed me that their souls were hollow," Ethan said, loud enough for the surrounding tables to hear. "Only you treated me with dignity when you thought I had nothing left to give."

Isabella hesitated, looking down at her rough, hard-working hands, then looked into his steady gray eyes. Slowly, she placed her hand in his. His grip was warm, strong, and protective.

"The Vance Foundation requires a new Executive Director," Ethan said, turning her toward the ballroom. "Someone who understands the value of human dignity. Someone who doesn't bow to bullies, and who defends the defenseless. Isabella, the position is yours, starting tonight. Five million dollars annual salary, and complete control of our global philanthropic initiatives."

Gasps of utter shock rippled through the remaining guests. Henderson, the banquet manager who had tried to fire her, collapsed into an empty chair, his jaw hanging slack.

Tears sprang to Isabella’s eyes, but this time, they were tears of awe and vindication. "Mr. Vance... I don't know what to say... I was just a waitress..."

May you like

"You were the only human being in this room," Ethan replied softly.

He offered her his arm, and with her head held high, Isabella took it. Together, they walked past the frozen, humiliated elite of Manhattan, stepping out of the glittering ballroom and into the cool, clear night air—leaving behind a broken past, and stepping forward to rule an empire.
