Chapter 8 - The Raid at Mach 1

The Apex Defense Dynamics complex looked like a private fortress. Guard towers bristled with automated tracking cameras, and a seventy-foot communication dish stood in the center of the campus, pulsing with high-frequency telemetry.

Inside the glass-paneled executive suite on the third floor of the primary administration building, Arthur Vance was sweating through his bespoke Italian suit.

“Where are the shredding teams?!” Vance screamed into his gold-plated desk phone. “Why isn't the server purge complete?!”

“Sir, the files are encrypted with military-grade redundancy,” his chief technician panicked from the basement server room. “It takes twenty minutes to overwrite the flight logs from Tonopah! If we shut the power down now, the drives won't erase—they’ll just lock in place!”

“I don't care about locking them, I care about destroying them!” Vance roared, throwing his coffee cup against the wall. “Sterling relieved Harlan an hour ago! The OSI is already en route with federal warrants! If they find the communication handshake between this building and Echo-Seven’s flight computer, we aren't just facing corporate bankruptcy—we’re facing federal execution for treason!”

“Sir...” the technician’s voice suddenly turned into a whimper. “You need to look out your window.”

Vance frowned, dropping the phone. He walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass wall overlooking the private desert valley.

The sky was empty. Silent.

Then, the mountain ridge three miles away seemed to explode.

A matte-black shape tore over the jagged peaks at ground level, traveling so fast the human eye could barely process its silhouette. It produced no sound—not until it was already past the perimeter fence.

And then, the sonic boom hit the building.

The shockwave blasted through the valley like a high-explosive artillery shell. The floor-to-ceiling glass of Vance’s executive office shattered inward with a deafening roar, raining crystalline shards across the mahogany furniture. Vance was thrown backward onto his hands and knees, clutching his bleeding ears as the roar of twin scramjets shook the steel foundations of the compound.

The *Night-Falcon-02* banked hard over the compound, its wingtip cutting within fifty feet of the primary communication tower.

Inside the cockpit, Claire centered her targeting reticle on the main dish.

*TARGET LOCKED: TRANSMISSION TOWER.*

*BROADCAST LINK: ESTABLISHED.*

“Mason, dump the package!” Claire commanded through her mask.

“Broadcasting now!” Mason’s voice cheered in her headset. “Uploading NSA-level digital recovery protocols... we’re in their system, Claire! The EMP link has frozen their server purge! We are pulling the entire database right now!”

Down in the compound, private security forces scrambled onto the tarmac with shoulder-mounted Stinger surface-to-air missiles. Two guards aimed their launchers directly at the belly of the circling black jet.

*WARNING: INFRARED LOCK.*

Claire saw them on her ventral camera feed.

“Bad choice,” she muttered.

She toggled her electronic warfare pod to maximum dispersion and hit the chaff-release. A blinding storm of ionized aluminum strips exploded from the jet, creating a false radar cloud that blinded the missile seekers. Simultaneously, she dropped the nose and leveled the jet twenty feet above the runway, roaring directly at the guard towers.

The sheer pressure wave of her scramjets at three hundred knots flipped two armored security SUVs onto their roofs, sending armed contractors scattering into the dirt for their lives.

“Download complete!” Mason shouted through the comms. “General Sterling has the files! We’ve got the full paper trail: Harlan’s offshore accounts, Arthur Vance’s personal authorization for the scuttle code, and the design flaw reports Apex buried six months ago!”

Claire pulled the stick back, rocketing straight up into the clouds.

“Apex Compound,” Claire broadcast on open frequency, her voice echoing through every speaker, radio, and phone in the facility. “Your data has been intercepted. The perimeter is surrounded by federal authorities. Step out of the buildings and put your hands on your heads.”

She looked down through the glass canopy.

Beyond the outer perimeter gates, a convoy of thirty military police vehicles, escorted by four Black Hawk helicopters from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, was already rolling through the desert dust, sealing every exit.

Arthur Vance crawled through the broken glass of his office, his face cut, his suit ruined, staring in absolute terror at the sky.

Above him, circling like an angel of death, was the black fighter jet he had tried to destroy.
