Chapter 7 - The Arrest of the Princes

While the corporate spine of the family was being snapped, Team Bravo was delivering the promised reckoning to the heirs.
At the University of Law, Carter Hawthorne was standing at the podium of the mock-trial courtroom, dressed in an immaculate charcoal-gray Italian suit, delivering an opening argument on the sanctity of contractual law.
Sitting in the gallery were fifty of his classmates, three law professors, and several visiting partners from top-tier corporate firms.
The heavy mahogany doors at the back of the courtroom burst open.
Captain Miller of the State Police walked in, flanked by four uniformed state troopers with sidearms unholstered, tactical vests strapped over their uniforms.
The entire courtroom went dead silent. The presiding professor stood up, flustered. "Excuse me, officer! What is the meaning of this disruption? This is an academic proceeding!"
Captain Miller ignored him completely. His eyes were locked on Carter Hawthorne.
"Carter Hawthorne?" Miller’s voice boomed through the vaulted room.
Carter stood behind the wooden podium, his face freezing into a smirk that didn't quite reach his eyes. "Yes, Captain? If this is about a parking ticket on my Porsche, my father’s attorney will—"
"Carter Hawthorne, you are under arrest for first-degree kidnapping, aggravated felonious assault, distribution of Schedule II controlled substances, and conspiracy to commit murder," Captain Miller announced with absolute, booming authority.
The whispers in the room erupted like a burst pipe. Several students pulled out their phones, instantly hitting record.
Carter’s smirk vanished. The blood drained from his face until his skin resembled wet paper. "What? This is absurd! Do you know who my father is?! You can't touch me! Get your hands off me!"
Two massive state troopers moved behind the podium. They didn't show the slightest deference to his three-thousand-dollar suit. They grabbed his wrists, jerked them behind his back with enough force to pop his shoulder joint, and slapped heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists.
"You have the right to remain silent," the trooper barked into Carter’s ear, forcing him violently down onto his knees on the carpeted floor.
"Call Julian!" Carter shrieked, his voice cracking into a high, pathetic whine as his face was pressed into the wooden base of the judge’s bench. "Call my mother! Pierce! Where is Pierce?!"
Pierce Hawthorne was already in custody.
Twenty minutes earlier, at the university boathouse, four squad cars had pinned Pierce’s black Mercedes G-Wagon against the rowing docks. When Pierce had tried to reverse and ram an unmarked cruiser, two officers had drawn their sidearms, shattered the driver-side window with tactical batons, and dragged him through the glass onto the wet gravel.
On the passenger seat of the Mercedes, detectives recovered an aluminum baseball bat still stained with microscopic traces of Lily Vance's blood, along with three unsealed baggies of cocaine and five zip-ties identical to the ones cut from Lily’s wrists in our trauma bay.
By 1400 hours, both Hawthorne boys were sitting in separate, windowless interrogation rooms at the county detention center—not the private local precinct where their father held sway, but the maximum-security state holding facility fifty miles away.
Their phones were seized. Their mugshots—Carter with his hair wild, crying like a child, and Pierce with glass cuts bleeding down his cheek—were uploaded directly to the state police public media server.
Within fifteen minutes, the mugshots were trending nationally on social media.
The narrative wasn't about wealthy playboys having an unfortunate misunderstanding.
The narrative, seeded meticulously by Tessa Vale through every major media outlet from Atlanta to New York, was headline news:
**"SPOON-FED PREDATORS: Billionaire Hawthorne Heirs Arrested for Kidnapping and Torture of 19-Year-Old College Student."**
The fortress had lost its gates, its walls, and its princes.
