Chapter 40 - The Iron Hand in the Depths

Arthur pulled himself upward onto the boathouse floor, collapsing onto the splintered wood beside Detective Vance.
Below them, the underground chamber was completely filled with swirling, frothing black water.
The iron trapdoor shuddered violently as the pressure mounted, threatening to tear itself free from the surrounding foundation.
"Did she... did she make it out?" Vance panted, his chest heaving as he leaned against the doorway for support.
Arthur looked down into the dark opening, watching the vortex of bubbles churning beneath the surface of the flood.
Silence settled over the boathouse, broken only by the whistling blizzard outside and the groan of shifting timber.
There was no sign of Eleanor’s white fur coat, no splashing hands, no frantic cries for help.
"It’s over," Arthur whispered, closing his eyes as a wave of profound relief washed through his shivering body. "She’s gone."
Vance reached for his shoulder radio, keying the microphone with trembling, bloodstained fingers.
"Dispatch, this is Vance," he spoke into the static. "Send medical and dive rescue to the Blackwood boathouse immediately. Suspect is—"
A sudden, thunderous crash shook the entire building.
The wooden planks beneath Arthur’s knees shattered upward in an explosion of splinters and freezing foam.
A pale, bloodstained hand broke through the floorboards, its long fingernails digging savagely into Arthur’s bare ankle.
Arthur screamed in terror as he was yanked forward, his fingernails scraping uselessly against the rotten wood.
Eleanor’s face broke the surface of the water beneath the floorboards, her eyes completely bloodshot, her lips pulled back in a feral snarl.
She had wrapped a length of heavy iron mooring chain around her own forearm—and the other end was looping fast around Arthur’s leg.
"If I drown, Arthur," Eleanor hissed, her voice sounding like a demon from the bottom of the abyss, "you drown with me!"
Vance raised his pistol, but the chamber clicked dry on an empty magazine.
"Arthur!" Vance yelled, lunging forward with his bare hands.
The heavy iron chain tightened with brutal, crushing force around Arthur's ankle bone.
The massive weight of the sunken safe in the flooded vault gave way beneath the foundation, dragging the chain downward into the black depths.
Arthur’s torso slipped over the edge of the shattered floorboards.

As the icy water swallowed his chest, his eyes met Eleanor’s one last time in the suffocating darkness below.
In her free hand, glinting beneath the black water, was the bronze candlestick’s missing twin—and its hollow base was ticking with the faint, rhythmic red pulse of a digital countdown.
