Chapter 43 - The Heirs' Gambit

Elena froze, staring at her seven-year-old son in utter disbelief. "A what, Mateo?"

Mateo walked forward, climbing onto the empty chair beside Marcus Wright's digital terminal. He reached out, pointing his small index finger at the debt breakdown displayed on the screen.

"Mr. Wright," Mateo said, addressing our fifty-year-old chief counsel with the effortless authority of a managing partner, "what type of debt does the Barrett syndicate owe to the European lenders? Is it senior secured paper, or mezzanine unsecured credit?"

Marcus Wright blinked twice, adjusting his tortoiseshell glasses, his jaw slack on the video feed. "It’s... primarily unsecured mezzanine bonds held by an investment consortium in Frankfurt, young man. But how do you—"

"Mom bought us the introductory commercial case studies for our private library at St. Sebastian’s," Dante answered casually, leaning against the edge of the table while examining a silver paperweight. "In chapter four, when a maritime conglomerate defaults on unsecured credit, the vessel assets can be legally segregated under Chapter 11 cross-border protocol. The European lenders don't want old rusted container hulls; they want liquid cash flow."

Marco grinned, revealing a gap where his top baby tooth had fallen out two weeks ago in Chatham. "And who controls the only deep-water access permits that can turn those European hulls into cash flow? The Moretti Logistics Group in Boston."

Leo looked up at me, his hazel eyes meeting mine with absolute clarity. "Dad, Barrett thought he was handing us a bomb. But a bomb only blows up if you hold it. If we accept the shares into a blind educational trust, Sloane never gets the voting rights. Then, Moretti Logistics buys the Frankfurt debt at a seventy-percent discount because the lenders think the company is worthless. We convert the debt into preferred equity, absorb Barrett’s European routes into our clean logistics network, and dismantle Sloane’s legal defense permanently."

The entire room fell into an awe-struck, paralyzed silence.

Uncle Vincenzo’s mouth was open so wide his unlit cigar slipped from between his teeth and bounced across the Persian rug. Christian lowered his tactical tablet, staring at the four boys as if they were alien beings dropped from the stratosphere. Across the Atlantic, Marcus Wright was furiously scribbling notes on a legal pad, muttering curses of sheer legal ecstasy under his breath.

"Good God almighty," Wright whispered through the speaker. "The boy is right. Under the Hague Convention on cross-border bankruptcy, that maneuver is completely airtight. It would legally sanitize the entire Barrett fleet, strip Sloane of every penny of residual leverage, and expand the Moretti clean logistics footprint into Rotterdam and Genoa in a single regulatory filing."

Elena slowly sank into the nearest leather armchair, looking at our four sons with a mixture of terror, pride, and breathless wonder. She pressed her fingertips to her temples, laughing softly. "Dominic... what have we created?"

"We created Morettis, Elena," I said, a dark, victorious chuckle rising from my chest.

I walked over to the table, crouching down until my eyes were level with Leo and his brothers. Looking at these four young boys, standing shoulder-to-shoulder in their pajamas, I didn't see children playing with corporate jargon; I saw the dawn of an untouchable dynasty. They had taken a dead monster’s final, venomous strike and turned it into an international commercial empire before midnight.

"Tomorrow morning, Mr. Wright," I commanded, rising to my full height and letting the voice of the Don echo through the Roman villa. "Execute the trust filings in Zurich. Buy the Frankfurt debt. And notify the federal court in Boston that the Barrett shipping lines belong to my sons."
