Chapter 27 - The 14-Minute Confession

The seconds on the antique grandfather clock in the museum gallery ticked away like heavy hammer strikes against an anvil.
*13 minutes.*
Victoria stared at the surveillance feed. Aurora’s little face was pressed against Mia’s neck, shivering from the biting New York wind. Mia’s eyes were darting from shadow to shadow, every instinct screaming that the trap was closing around them.
"You really are a monster, Christian," Victoria said, her voice dropping into a register so dangerously calm it made Julian shift uncomfortably. "To threaten your own flesh and blood for the sake of corporate balance sheets."
"Flesh and blood mean nothing without legacy," Christian replied coldly. "A child is merely a repository for stock voting rights until she is old enough to be trained. Mia is an infection that must be excised."
*10 minutes.*
Julian leaned in, his voice dripping with spiteful triumph. "Did you really think you could win, Mother? You took everything from me. You stripped my titles, you put me in an orange jumpsuit, you paraded that peasant girl in front of the press like a saint! Now you’re going to crawl on that stage and beg the world to forgive you."
Victoria turned her head slowly, looking at Julian not with anger, but with profound, devastating pity. "You fool, Julian. You think your father brought you back because he loves you? You were always too stupid to see the board."
Julian’s face twisted into an ugly snarl. "Shut up!"
"He brought you back because Section 14 of the Vance Founders' Charter requires two direct male signatures to liquidate the family's Swiss gold reserves," Victoria said, her voice slicing through Julian’s bravado like a scalpels. "The moment you sign those dissolution papers tonight, Julian... do you really think he's going to let an unstable, disgraced ex-con share the throne with him?"
Christian’s jaw tightened. "Do not test my patience, Victoria. Nine minutes."
Victoria took a slow, deep breath. She glanced at the gilded doors leading into the massive Temple of Dendur, where five hundred of the most powerful people on earth were currently taking their seats, awaiting the guest of honor.
"I need to use the powder room to fix my makeup," Victoria said evenly. "If I am to perform your confession, I will not do it looking like a victim."
Christian gestured to the two Aegis Vanguard guards. "Escort her to the private lounge. She has four minutes. If she is not at the podium at the zero mark, execute the team in Queens."
"Understood, sir," Agent Lin said, stepping out from the shadows of a Roman archway.
Victoria walked toward the private restroom corridor, flanking the Temple of Dendur. Her heart was beating at an electric pace, but her hands were steady. As she entered the opulent, marble-lined powder room, Lin followed her inside, blocking the only exit with her hand resting on her concealed holster.
"Four minutes, Mrs. Vance," Lin said cold-bloodedly. "No tricks."
Victoria stepped up to the massive gilded mirror, opening her designer velvet clutch. She pulled out a tube of crimson lipstick.
"You know, Agent Lin—or whatever Christian pays you to call yourself," Victoria murmured, uncapping the lipstick with an elegant twist. "You made a fatal mistake when you raided my California estate."
Lin scoffed. "And what mistake was that?"
"You assumed Marcus was just private security," Victoria said, catching Lin's reflection in the glass.
Suddenly, the heavy mirror behind Lin didn't just reflect the room—it swung open on silent, pneumatic hinges.
A hand wrapped in tactical Kevlar emerged from the darkness of the maintenance passage, locking around Lin’s throat in a crushing, professional chokehold. Lin choked, her hands clawing wildly at the grip, but she was hauled backward into the service corridor like a rag doll. A muffled thud and the snap of zip-ties followed.
Marcus stepped out from the passage. His left arm was wrapped in a bloody medical sling, his face pale and battered, but his right hand held a suppressed tactical pistol.
"You took your time, Marcus," Victoria said, applying her crimson lipstick with flawless precision.
"Traffic on Fifth Avenue was terrible, Ma'am," Marcus rasped, tossing a military-grade satellite phone onto the marble vanity. "The signal is patched. Mia is clear. We intercepted the hit team in Queens forty seconds ago. She’s with the New York State Police tactical unit inside an armored transport heading for the governor's mansion."
Victoria capped her lipstick with a sharp *snap*.

"Good," she whispered, her eyes turning into pure, unadulterated diamond. "Now, Christian is waiting for his fourteen minutes. Let’s give him a performance he will never forget."
