Chapter 7 - The Fallout In The Family Chat

By Sunday morning, the social fallout of the canceled wedding had spread through our extended family and high-society circles like wildfire.

My phone, which was usually peacefully quiet over the weekend, started buzzing continuously by 8:00 AM. Group chats I had muted years ago were suddenly blowing up with frantic messages, voice notes, and scandalous rumors.

I tapped open the family group chat—aptly named “The Johnson Dynasty”—and watched the digital war zone unfold in real time.

Aunt Susan had kicked things off at 7:30 AM with a breathless text:

“Cynthia, honey, are you okay?! Everyone is saying Andrew walked out at the altar and the wedding cost $150k down the drain?! Please tell me this is a horrible nightmare!”

Mom hadn’t replied for over an hour. When she finally did, her message was defensive, panicked, and entirely delusional:

“It was just a temporary misunderstanding! The kids are just taking some time to cool off! Everything is under control, Susan, please don't listen to gossip!”

Then Uncle Bob chimed in with zero filter:

“A misunderstanding?! Cynthia, half the country club saw the cake fall on you and heard the groom announce Madison was drowning in ninety grand of secret debt! Bobbie’s catering company is already threatening to sue you for the deposit!”

I leaned back against my plush velvet sofa, sipping my morning matcha latte, quietly entertained by the absolute chaos playing out on my screen.

Suddenly, a direct message popped up from Madison herself.

“Claire. I know you're reading this.”

I raised an eyebrow and tapped open her chat.

“This is all your fault,” Madison’s text continued, her typos clearly showing how frantic she was. “You planned this. You and Andrew plotted behind my back to humiliate me in front of everyone I know! You think you're so smart just because you have some stupid computer money, but you ruined my life!”

I calmly typed back:

“Madison, I didn't force you to run up ninety-two thousand dollars in secret debt. I didn't force you to forge Andrew's signature on a mortgage application. And I certainly didn't push the cake over. You built this house of cards all by yourself. I just supplied the fan.”

Her response was instantaneous:

“I hate you! I hope you rot alone in your pathetic little apartment!”

I couldn't help rolling my eyes, a smirk forming on my lips. I decided it was time to drop the final, definitive truth bomb.

“Oh, by the way, Madison? You might want to check with Dad about whose apartment I actually live in. Spoiler alert: I don't live in a shoebox. And as of this morning, Dad and Mom received notice that their lease on the family house is officially under review. You might need to invite them to crash on your couch—oh wait, you don't have one anymore because Andrew annulled the marriage and took the townhouse. Oops.”

Silence.

The chat went completely dead. Madison stopped typing. She didn't reply with another insult, a voice note, or a threat. She finally realized the terrifying scale of the reality she was facing: her older sister wasn't a struggling failure. She was the landlord holding all the cards.
