Chapter 5 - The Legal Fallout

The arrival of the local police department transformed the high-society wedding reception into an absolute media-adjacent circus. Within twenty minutes, the grand ballroom—once glittering with elite guests, expensive champagne, and cultured laughter—was practically empty, save for a few stubborn onlookers, two investigating officers, and my utterly ruined family.

Officer Marcus Vance, a seasoned precinct detective with sharp eyes and a no-nonsense demeanor, strode across the polished wooden floorboards directly toward the head table. He held a thick clipboard in one hand and flashed a brief, professional nod toward Daniel.

"Mr. Brooks?" Detective Vance asked, his voice cutting through the quiet sniffling coming from the stage.

"Detective," Daniel responded, stepping forward and extending a hand. "Thank you for getting here so quickly. I have all the documentation right here." He gestured toward the digital tablet in his briefcase, which contained the complete forensic accounting report prepared by Mercer Capital’s internal audit team.

Officer Vance took the tablet, his eyes scanning the detailed transaction logs, forged digital signatures, and cross-referenced IP addresses belonging to the residential IP router registered to my parents' suburban home.

"Well, the paper trail is remarkably clear," Detective Vance noted, glancing up from the screen to lock his gaze onto my father and mother, who were huddled together near the tiered wedding cake. "Unauthorized corporate fund diversion, interstate wire fraud, and identity falsification. These aren't just civil disputes, Mr. Brooks. These are felony-level offenses."

My father let out a desperate, strangled sound and stepped forward, his hands trembling violently. "Officer, please! There’s been a terrible misunderstanding! This is a family matter! My daughter—my future son-in-law—we were just negotiating internal corporate restructuring! It’s all a mistake!"

"It wasn't a mistake, Arthur," a cold, sharp voice echoed through the quiet room.

Everyone turned. I stepped out from the shadows of the side pillar, my expression entirely calm as I walked toward the detective and my father.

My father’s face contorted with pure fury, the veneer of polite corporate charm completely stripped away. "You! You little ungrateful viper! You orchestrated this entire thing just to destroy your own sister! You called the cops on your own flesh and blood!"

"I didn't call the police, Dad," I replied evenly, stopping just a few feet away from him. "Daniel’s legal team did. All I did was hand over the evidence that proved you and Vanessa had been systematically stealing from Mercer Medical for the past three months to pay for a party you couldn't afford."

"You're lying!" Vanessa shrieked from the stage, her wedding dress dragging uselessly across the floor as she stumbled down the steps. Her mascara was completely ruined, running in dark streaks down her flushed cheeks. "You've always been jealous of me! Ever since we were kids! You were always the boring, pathetic sister who nobody wanted, so you bought a few cheap buildings and pretended you were some kind of corporate mogul!"

Detective Vance frowned, looking between Vanessa and me. He raised an eyebrow. "Excuse me, miss. Are you saying the property ownership records provided in this dossier are fabricated?"

Vanessa threw her hands in the air. "Of course they are! Claire works as a low-level office assistant! She doesn't own anything! She lives off handouts!"

I didn't even bother arguing with her. I simply reached into my handbag, pulled out my corporate identification badge, and handed it directly to Detective Vance, along with a certified copy of the commercial property deed for the Grand Luxe Ballroom.

Officer Vance took the documents, flipped open my ID badge, and checked the holographic seal against the state corporate registry on his departmental smartphone. A slow, knowing smile spread across his face.

"Well," Detective Vance said, handing the badge back to me with a respectful nod. "According to the state registry, Ms. Mercer is the sole managing director and majority stakeholder of Mercer Capital, holding primary legal title to eleven commercial properties downtown, including this exact building." He turned his gaze back to Vanessa and my father, his tone hardening. "Which means not only did you commit wire fraud against Mr. Brooks's company, but you also attempted to fraudulently contract services inside a venue owned by the very person you were publicly humiliating."

Eleanor let out a weak gasp and slumped sideways into a chair, finally succumbing to the overwhelming weight of reality.

Detective Vance signaled to the two uniformed officers standing near the entrance. "Mr. Arthur Sterling, and Mrs. Eleanor Sterling... please turn around and place your hands behind your back. You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit grand larceny and corporate wire fraud."
