Chapter 7 - The Hostile Audit

The road between Boston and Worcester was a nightmare of frozen steel and blinding white mist.
The rain had turned into sleet, freezing upon contact with the windshield. Abandoned commuter cars lined the shoulders of the highway like frozen carcasses, their hazard lights blinking lazily through the gloom.
I was behind the wheel of Vanguard’s flagship transport—a customized, heavy-duty Freightliner with reinforced suspension, four-wheel drive, and an onboard cryogenic stabilization vault. Marcus sat in the navigator’s seat, his eyes glued to the dual thermal-imaging displays mounted on the dashboard.
"State police just closed Exit 12," Marcus said, tapping his screen. "Wreckage across all four lanes. If we stay on the interstate, we’re stuck for three hours."
"We’re not staying on the interstate," I said, cranking the wheel hard to the right.
The heavy truck lurched, its aggressive studded tires biting into the packed snow of the off-ramp. We plunged onto Route 9, a winding, two-lane rural road cutting through the dark, icy woods of central Massachusetts.
The radio crackled. It was Teresa back at the Bennett dispatch hub.
"Samantha, do you copy?"
"I copy, Teresa. Go."
"The hospital just called. The surgical team is opening the child’s chest right now. They have twenty-two minutes of reserve blood before they hit a critical shortfall. If the graft isn't there by 9:45 PM, they won't be able to reconstruct the aorta."
I checked the dashboard clock: 9:26 PM. Nineteen minutes.
"Tell the chief of surgery to prep the surgical field," I said, shifting into a lower gear and pressing the accelerator down. "Apex Vanguard is seven miles out."
The heavy truck roared, its twin turbochargers whistling through the freezing darkness. The rear end fishtailed slightly as we hit a patch of pure black ice on a downhill curve, but six years of navigating overloaded convoys through muddy Afghan mountain passes took over. I counter-steered with calm, instinctual muscle memory, feathering the brakes just enough to let the weight of the vault settle, dragging the truck back into alignment.
Beside me, Marcus didn't even flinch. He just adjusted the thermal monitor. "Clear on the left. Two miles to Worcester Medical perimeter."
We broke through the dense treeline, the amber streetlights of Worcester reflecting off the icy roads. We blasted through three red lights, our emergency strobe lights painting the falling sleet in violent flashes of blue and amber.
At 9:41 PM, the Freightliner slid to a halt directly outside the emergency surgical bay of Children's Memorial Hospital.
Two surgical orderlies were already waiting in the freezing wind, wrapped in surgical gowns, pushing an insulated mobile incubator.
Marcus jumped out, yanked open the rear vault doors, and pulled the sealed, temperature-locked titanium container from its cradle. The digital display on the container glowed steady and green: **TEMP: 3.8°C — OPTIMAL.**
He slammed the container into the orderlies' hands.
"Go, go, go!" Marcus shouted.
The orderlies sprinted through the sliding glass doors, disappearing into the trauma wing.
I leaned my head back against the cold leather of the headrest, letting my breath out in a long, ragged plume of steam. My forearms were trembling from the physical effort of fighting the steering wheel across forty miles of ice.
Marcus climbed back into the cab, slamming the door against the howling sleet. He wiped a mixture of melted snow and sweat from his forehead, looking at me with a slow, broad grin.
"Nineteen minutes, Boss. That’s a new course record."
Before I could answer, my phone vibrated violently against the console.
It wasn't Maya. It wasn't Warren.
It was Diane.
I tapped the screen and brought the phone to my ear. "Yes, Diane."
Her voice wasn't haughty. It wasn't aristocratic. It was raw, frantic, and entirely unraveling.
"Samantha... you need to come to the Caldwell house right now."
"I’m working, Diane. I just delivered an aortic graft that your daughter forgot to schedule."
May you like
"Warren is gone," Diane said, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper. "Federal agents from the Department of Justice just raided our residence in Brookline. They took his files, they took the computers... and Samantha, they have an arrest warrant for both of us."
