Chapter 8 - The Fall of Cedar Creek’s Queen

By late afternoon, the news of Helen Lawson’s arrest had ripped through the county like a brushfire.

The local news vans were parked three deep outside the county jail in Carthage. The headline on the state news bulletin was blaring across social media: *Prominent Widow of Decorated Army Colonel Arrested at Memorial Service for Attempted Murder and Fraud.*

Chloe and I sat on the porch of the family farmhouse, mugs of black coffee cooling in our hands.

The Lawson farm was magnificent—six hundred acres of rolling Tennessee pasture, framed by dense stands of white oak and hickory that turned brilliant crimson in the autumn. The late afternoon sun bathed the fields in a golden, peaceful light. For the first time in twelve years, the suffocating shadow that had hung over this land was gone.

The gravel driveway crunched as a patrol car pulled up. Sheriff Vance stepped out, his Stetson pushed back on his head, carrying a manila case file.

He walked up the porch steps, nodding respectfully to both of us. "Evening, girls."

"Garrett," I said, offering him the empty wicker chair beside me. "How is she?"

Vance sighed heavily, leaning against the porch railing instead. "She hasn't stopped screaming at the state investigators. Demanded three different high-powered defense attorneys from Nashville. But it won't do her any good."

"Did they find the poison?" Chloe asked quietly, her fingers gripping her coffee mug so tightly her knuckles were white.

Vance nodded solemnly. "The state forensic team executed a search warrant on the greenhouse two hours ago. Behind the false panel in the potting shed, right where Robert's letter said it would be. Three commercial bottles of thallium concentrate, along with the altered financial ledgers and forged power-of-attorney documents."

He looked out across the pastures, shaking his head in quiet disbelief.

"Robert had documented every dose, Rachel. He kept a hidden calendar inside the lining of his old field jacket. Every time his symptoms flared after Helen made his breakfast, he logged the date, the time, and the symptoms. He gave the TBI an open-and-shut case."

"Why didn't he just leave her, Garrett?" Chloe asked, a tear slipping down her cheek. "Why did he stay in that house and let her do that to him?"

"Because he knew Helen," Vance replied gently. "He knew that if he filed for divorce, she’d turn her fury on you, Chloe. She would have dragged you through every court in Tennessee, tried to ruin your reputation, tried to take every cent Robert had so you'd be left with nothing. Robert stayed to gather enough hard evidence to put her away for the rest of her natural life."

Vance touched the brim of his hat. "Your daddy fought a holding action, girls. Just like he did in the desert. He took the hits so you two could have the future he promised you."
