Chapter 10 - Complete Retribution and A New Dawn

Detective Sarah Vance stepped forward to the podium, opening her state folder to reveal an array of signed criminal arrest warrants.

She announced to the court that the District Attorney had formally indicted Daniel on multiple felony counts, including attempted murder and aggravated poisoning.

He was additionally charged with grand theft for draining joint marital accounts, felony insurance fraud, and witness tampering.

Patricia was indicted as an active co-conspirator to attempted murder, child endangerment, and illegal false imprisonment of a minor.

Patricia let out a high-pitched, pathetic screech of horror, collapsing backward onto the gallery bench while frantically pointing at her son.

She screamed at the top of her lungs that the digitalis had been Daniel’s idea and that she had merely followed her son’s instructions to save the family name.

Daniel turned on his own mother with bared teeth, cursing her vilely in open court, accusing her of being the mastermind behind the entire scheme.

Judge Hanley looked upon the squirming, self-destructing pair with absolute, unadulterated disgust.

He brought his heavy gavel down with the force of an executioner’s axe, officially dismissing Daniel’s custody petition with extreme prejudice.

He issued an immediate, permanent, and unalterable order granting me sole legal, physical, and medical custody of Lily.

He issued a lifetime order of protection, strictly prohibiting Daniel and Patricia from ever coming within one thousand feet of my daughter or myself.

Judge Hanley looked down at me, removed his glasses, and offered a formal, public apology on behalf of the entire judicial system.

He admitted that his blindness had almost cost an innocent mother her life, and he thanked God that true heroes had stepped into his courtroom to save me.

Two armed state troopers entered the well of the court, unholstered their handcuffs, and grabbed Daniel’s arms, twisting them painfully behind his back.

The metallic click of the handcuffs ratcheting tight around Daniel’s wrists sounded like the sweetest symphony I had ever heard.

He sobbed openly, begging me for mercy as the officers dragged him away, but I did not offer him so much as a single glance.

Two more officers escorted a weeping, hysterical Patricia out the side doors, her pearls swinging violently as she was hauled into criminal custody.

I walked out of Courtroom 4B with my head held high, stepping into the brilliant morning sunlight that bathed the courthouse steps.

Colonel Aaron Carter walked beside me, stopping at the base of the marble pillars to extend his hand in congratulations.

I looked at the man who had seen my dying pulse, who had braved a courtroom and faced down monsters to save my life.

Instead of taking his hand, I threw my arms around his neck, hugging him with a depth of gratitude words could never possibly capture.

He smiled warmly, patted my shoulder, and told me that defending the innocent was the only oath he had ever truly cared about.

Aunt Martha pulled up to the curb in her car, and the back door flew open instantly.

Lily leaped out of the vehicle and sprinted across the pavement, her golden hair flying behind her like a banner of pure freedom.

I dropped to my knees on the sunlit marble steps, feeling the steady, powerful, mechanical rhythm of my heart beating inside my chest.

I caught Lily in my arms, lifting her high into the warm air as her radiant, joyful laughter rang out across the city square.

The monsters had been banished into steel cages where they belonged, my strength had been forged in fire, and our new life had finally begun.
