Chapter 69 - The Architecture of Deceit

Dr. Brandt let out a thin, raspy laugh from beside the marble console. "You see, Dr. Linwood? I told you she would not thank you. Sentimentality has rotted her scientific core. She married a guard dog and spent millions saving orphans when she could have rewritten the genetic ceiling of human existence."

"Quiet, Victor," Arthur commanded without shifting his gaze from mine. The authority in his tone was absolute; Brandt's smirk withered instantly, his jaw tightening in bitter deference.

"Step aside, Marcus," Arthur said smoothly. "You are an exceptional soldier, Commander Hayes. But you are playing a tactical game in a grandmaster's house. You think this vault is an escape route? It is an incubation chamber. And the protocol is already at stage four."

Marcus did not flinch. "I don’t care about your philosophy, old man. My crosshairs are resting between your disciple's ribs, and my second magazine has your name stamped on every round. Step back to the wall, hands behind your head."

Arthur shook his head with mild pity. "Do you hear that hum beneath the floorboards, Commander? That is not electrical feedback. That is a pressurized cascade. If you pull that trigger, the solenoid valves will fail open. Three hundred liters of liquid nitrogen per minute. We would all be crystallized before your brass casings hit the floor."

"He's bluffing," I said, my voice hardening as the analytical scientist within me wrestled control away from the traumatized daughter. "You wouldn't have spent thirty years in hiding just to suffocate in a basement vault beneath Paradeplatz. You didn't come here to die, Arthur. You came for the cylinder."

Arthur's eyes glinted with something resembling pride. "Always the sharpest mind in the room. You are correct. I do not intend to die here. But neither do I intend to let you walk out with the proprietary sequence. What you perfected in New York is only half of the equation, Sarah. Your foundation unlocked the receptor mechanism. But my vault holds the stabilizer. Together, they create an incurable bio-lock—or absolute cellular immunity."

"A monopoly on life," I realized, the horror finally crystallizing in my mind. "You don't want to cure diseases. You want to license survival."

"Survival is the only commodity that never depreciates," Arthur said quietly. "Now, give Victor the case. Let us finish what we began before you were born."
