Chapter 6 - Freezing the Faucet

Mara sat at the long mahogany dining table, her fingers dancing over the keys of her laptop like a concert pianist executing a ruthless sonata.
"First item," Mara said without looking up from the screen.
"Daniel’s position as Vice President of Regional Operations at Vance Logistics."
"The title you gave him so he wouldn't feel emasculated by your family's status."
"Revoke it," I said, leaning over her shoulder to watch the terminal.
"I already have the emergency board resolution drafted," Mara said, clicking a digital signature icon.
"As the sole beneficiary of the Montgomery Heritage Trust, which holds ninety-two percent of the voting shares in the logistics firm, you have the unilateral authority to terminate any executive officer for gross moral turpitude."
"The domestic violence charge and the protective order satisfy that threshold completely."
She pressed enter.
"His access to the corporate network was severed thirty seconds ago," she said, checking her watch.
"His company email is shut down."
"His building access badge at the downtown headquarters was just deactivated."
"Right now, if he's sitting in that executive boardroom trying to act like a boss, his laptop screen just turned completely blue."
I couldn't help but smile.
I imagined Daniel sitting at the head of the conference table, surrounded by managers he had spent years bullying, suddenly staring at an error message while his phone began blowing up with alerts.
"Next," Mara continued, pulling up a financial dashboard.
"The vehicles."
"The Audi A8 he's driving right now is registered directly to the corporate fleet under Vance Logistics."
"I have just dispatched a notice to the regional fleet management department."
"A commercial recovery team has been authorized to repossess the vehicle immediately wherever it is located."
"They’ll probably intercept him before he even finishes lunch, but let's hope he makes it here first so we can see the expression on his face."
"What about the cards?" I asked, my voice steady.
"The black corporate Amex card he uses to pay for his thousand-dollar hotel suites, his five-star lunches, and Gloria’s luxury shopping sprees?"
Mara's eyes gleamed with cold professional delight.
"Canceled as of four minutes ago," she said, turning the tablet toward me.
"The secondary card on your personal private wealth account—the one he uses when he wants to buy watches he claims he earned—has been restricted to a zero-dollar transaction limit."
"He currently possesses exactly seven hundred and forty-two dollars in his private checking account at First National."
"The rest of his so-called fortune was an elaborate illusion built entirely on your father's credit lines."
"And Gloria's hotel bill?" I inquired.
"Daniel charged Gloria’s suite at the Grandview Hotel to the corporate account last night," Mara chuckled darkly.
"The hotel finance manager was notified ten minutes ago that the card was unauthorized and flagged for fraudulent use."
"When Daniel arrives at the hotel to pick his mother up, the front desk is going to demand immediate settlement of the twelve-hundred-dollar overnight bill in cash or a valid personal card."
"And if he can't pay it, they won't even let her bags leave the lobby."
I closed my eyes for a brief moment, letting the sheer perfection of the trap wash over me.
For six years, Daniel had treated me like a dependent, a trophy that had outlived its decorative usefulness.
He had threatened me with poverty, telling me that without his protection, I would be nothing.
He had wielded the illusion of his wealth like a weapon to keep me trapped in a state of quiet obedience.
Now, the scaffolding was gone.
The curtain was pulled back, revealing the pathetic, bankrupt parasite who had mistaken the host’s generosity for his own inherent power.
"What about the criminal charges?" I asked, looking Mara directly in the eyes.
"Deputy Miller is already filing the domestic assault report with the District Attorney's office," Mara stated, her tone turning deadly serious.
"The footage from your hallway camera is definitive."
"The bruises on your face and shoulder are documented by forensic photographs."
"When Daniel steps foot on this property today, he is not just an unwelcome guest being turned away."
"He is a violent felon violating a lawful protection order."
"He will not be walking away from this lawn with his mother to find another hotel."
"He will be leaving in the back of a police cruiser in steel handcuffs."
A sharp knock sounded on the front door frame.
Deputy Miller walked into the foyer, his radio crackling with low static on his shoulder.
"Mrs. Montgomery, counselor," Miller said, looking out through the tall glass sidelights toward the long driveway.
"The motion sensors at the front perimeter gate just triggered."
"A black Audi sedan just passed through the outer entrance."
"He must have used his old gate remote before the frequencies were wiped."
I looked at the grandfather clock standing near the staircase.
The brass hands pointed precisely to 11:32 a.m.
Right on time.
Daniel was arriving with his precious mother, expecting roasted chicken, fine porcelain, and an apologetic, humiliated wife waiting to kiss their feet.
I set my teacup down on the polished wood of the table.
"Deputy," I said, my voice cold and calm as a winter storm.
May you like
"Let them come up the drive."
"I want Gloria to see every single inch of her son's kingdom before the gates slam shut behind them forever."
