Chapter 8 - The Price of Treachery

Lilibeth stood frozen in the center of the foyer, her arms trembling, her eyes darting between the closed front door and her disgraced son sitting on the floor.
The entire house smelled of ruin.
"You destroyed everything," Lilibeth hissed, turning toward me with venomous malice. "You drove that poor girl away! You murdered my grandchild’s future! You are a cold, calculating, demonic woman!"
"Your grandchild’s future was murdered the moment your son decided to build it on stolen money and stolen ground, Lilibeth," I replied, stepping forward until I was standing inches from her face. "You wanted to play the grand matriarch. You wanted to dictate terms in my house. You wanted to pack my life into cardboard boxes."
I reached into the pocket of my slacks and pulled out my smartphone. I tapped the screen three times and brought it to my ear.
"Marcus, Arthur, Julianne... and you, Lilibeth," I said aloud. "You have exactly ten minutes to gather your purses, your coats, and your dignity—if there’s any left—and get out of my home."
"You can't kick us out!" Marcus barked, trying to muster one final shred of bravado. "Adrian lives here! Adrian is your legal husband until a judge signs a divorce decree! He has tenant rights! He can invite whoever the hell he wants into this house!"
"Is that your legal advice, Arthur?" I asked, turning to the elder Vance. "Does Adrian have tenant rights?"
Arthur didn't answer. He couldn't. He knew the law.
"Adrian has no lease," I stated coldly. "The trust charter explicitly prohibits unauthorized sub-tenancy. Furthermore, thirty minutes ago, my attorney filed an Emergency Ex Parte Motion for Exclusive Use of Marital Residence and an Immediate Temporary Restraining Order based on financial abuse and domestic coercion."
I flipped my phone screen around, displaying the digital signature of Judge Harrison from the County Family Court.
"The order was signed forty minutes ago," I said. "Before you even finished demanding I pack my boxes, Adrian was legally barred from entering the premises of 142 Maplecrest Drive. Every second he remains inside these walls, he is in contempt of a judicial protective order."
Adrian looked up from the floor, his face completely pale, his eyes hollowed out with the realization that he had walked into an ambush planned with military perfection.
"Maria..." he croaked. "Where am I supposed to go? I don't have anywhere to sleep. My studio doesn't have a bed. My bank account is frozen."
"There are four boxes in the trunk of Marcus’s SUV," I said, quoting Julianne’s exact words back to them with icy satisfaction. "You can pack your clothes, your toiletries, and your laptop. You can stay at a motel on the interstate. Or maybe your mother can clear out her sewing room for you."
"You... you monster," Lilibeth choked out, tears of humiliation finally spilling over her wrinkled cheeks. "You planned this! You invited us here today just to humiliate us!"
"I didn't invite you, Lilibeth," I said, my voice dropping to a harsh, deadly whisper. "Adrian told me you were coming to discuss a 'peaceful separation.' You brought his pregnant mistress. You brought a Quitclaim Deed. You brought four cardboard boxes to throw me out of my dead mother’s gift. You came here to execute an execution. You just didn't realize the gallows were built for you."
Outside, the faint, rising wail of police sirens began echoing through the quiet, leafy streets of our upscale suburban neighborhood.
Marcus stiffened. "What is that?"
May you like
"That," I said, "is the local precinct responding to a reported domestic trespass. You have eight minutes left on your ten-minute grace period."
