Chapter 4 - The Documents Were About Lily
The papers were found inside Rachel’s coat pocket.
They came from a family-law attorney in Phoenix.
One was a motion to restore contact with Lily.
Another was a report from the treatment center confirming Rachel had completed the program and was clinically cleared to resume gradual parenting contact.
But the most important document was a copy of an email chain.
Vanessa had written to the treatment center pretending to act on Daniel’s behalf.
Please direct all communication through me. Daniel believes continued contact may destabilize Lily.
Daniel stared at the message.
He had never written that.
Never asked Vanessa to send it.
Rachel looked at him.
“You thought I abandoned her.”
He swallowed.
“Yes.”

“You never checked?”
That question stayed in the room longer than any accusation.
