Chapter 6 - Blood and Treachery

"Stay right where you are, Maya," Detective Reed said, his voice deep, gravelly, and instantly calming over the line. "Do not go back inside that house. Is anyone armed?"

"No," I replied, standing by the edge of my driveway next to a blooming Texas mountain laurel. "Just desperate."

"My unit is wrapping up an interview at the precinct on Airport Boulevard. I have two squad cars five minutes out from your location. Keep your eyes on the exits. If they try to leave with documents or laptops, do not engage. Just give me their direction of travel."

"Understood."

I hung up and stood on the asphalt, watching my own home.

Through the large front bay window, I could see chaos erupting. Chloe was throwing clothes, electronics, and makeup into two massive designer rolling duffels. Jason was pacing back and forth across the living room like a caged animal, holding his phone to his ear, waving his arms in frantic, jerky motions.

Suddenly, a silver Lexus sedan pulled into the cul-de-sac, tires screeching slightly against the curb.

The driver’s side door opened, and a woman in tight business attire and oversized sunglasses stepped out, clutching a leather briefcase.

Amber. The mobile notary.

She marched up the driveway with the brisk, arrogant confidence of someone who thought she was untouchable. "Chloe texted me. Where are the transfer deeds? I have another signing in Westlake in twenty minutes."

I stood in front of the walkway, blocking her path. "You’re Amber?"

She paused, looking me up and down with obvious disgust. "Yes. Who are you? The groundskeeper?"

"I am Maya Torres," I said clearly. "The sole owner of 1412 Willow Creek Lane."

Amber’s haughty expression vanished, replaced by an instantaneous flicker of guarded anxiety. She took half a step back. "I’m... I’m just here to notarize some standard corporate filings for Chloe."

"You’re here to notarize a forged quitclaim deed," I corrected her, pointing to the unmarked squad car that just turned the corner into the cul-de-sac, its red and blue grille lights flashing silently. "And Detective Marcus Reed from Financial Crimes is about thirty seconds behind that patrol unit. If you open that briefcase, Amber, your notary commission is going to be the absolute least of your legal problems."

Amber turned her head. When she saw the police cruiser pulling up behind her Lexus, the color drained from her lips so fast she looked like she might faint onto the grass. Without a single word, she spun on her designer heels, practically threw herself back into the Lexus, slammed the door, and reversed out of the driveway at thirty miles an hour, clipping my garbage cans in the process.

The patrol car blocked the mouth of the driveway, followed immediately by Detective Reed’s dark grey unmarked Ford Explorer.

Two uniformed officers stepped out of the cruiser, hands resting naturally near their duty belts.

Marcus Reed stepped out of the Explorer. He was a tall, broad-shouldered Black man in his late forties, wearing a tailored charcoal suit with a gold detective badge clipped to his belt next to his Glock. His eyes were sharp, missing nothing as he scanned the perimeter.

"Maya," Marcus nodded, walking up the driveway. "You look like you’ve been through the wringer."

"You have no idea, Marcus," I said, handing him the blue folder. "This is the forged transfer deed, the hard-money loan application for $320,000, and the LLC documents. They were trying to record it today using a dirty mobile notary who just fled the scene in a silver Lexus."

Marcus flipped through the pages with practiced, clinical efficiency. "Torres Horizon Properties. Lone Star Capital Equity. We’ve been tracking Lone Star on three other predatory refi rings in East Austin. They use straw-buyer LLCs to strip equity from elderly and out-of-town owners, then let the loans default and foreclose within six months."

He looked at the front door. "Are they still inside?"

"Yes."

May you like

"Alright," Marcus motioned to the two uniformed officers. "Let’s go have a conversation with the Superhosts."
