Chapter 16 - The Intruder in the Nursery

Ethan stepped into the foyer, his shoes making no sound against the hardwood. The smell hit him instantly: wet rain, expensive French perfume—the heavy, floral scent of jasmine that Claire used to wear—and the sharp, metallic tang of fresh blood.

The house was dead quiet except for the groan of the wind outside.

"Claire?" Ethan called out, his voice level, weapon raised at low ready, clearing the living room corners methodically.

No answer.

He moved down the central hallway toward the back wing of the house. The cottage was spacious, but at its far end was a small, sunlit room that Maya had spent the last two months quietly painting pale yellow—a room they hadn't told anyone about yet. A nursery for the child they were expecting in the spring.

The nursery door stood slightly open.

Inside, sitting in the hand-carved wooden rocking chair Ethan had spent three weekends assembling, was Claire Montgomery.

She looked ghastly. The ten years in federal custody had stripped away the polished, manicured veneer of the Manhattan socialite. Her cheekbones were sharp, her blond hair hung in damp, ragged strands, and her skin was parchment-pale. She was dressed in an oversized trench coat, soaked through at the shoulders.

Cradled tightly against her chest was a small bundle wrapped in gray cashmere.

And on her lap rested a snub-nosed revolver, her trembling thumb hovering over the hammer.

"You took your time, Ethan," she whispered. Her voice was cracked, ruined by years of prison yard air and cigarettes.

"Drop the gun, Claire," Ethan said, stepping into the doorway, keeping his firearm leveled at center mass. "I know about the Reno certificate. I know about the vault on Fifth Avenue. It’s over. Richard is dead."

Claire let out a low, ragged laugh that sounded like dry leaves scraping across concrete. She looked down at the bundle in her arms, then slowly raised her bloodshot eyes to Ethan.

"Richard isn't dead, you idiot," she said, her voice shaking with a terrifying mixture of laughter and tears. "Richard never dies. He just changes jurisdictions."

She shifted the cashmere blanket slightly, and Ethan’s stomach plummeted.

Inside the bundle was not a weapon. It was an infant, barely days old, sleeping soundly beneath the soft wool.

"Meet your brother," Claire whispered. "Or your son. Even the lab in Zurich couldn't tell for certain."
