Chapter 4 - Blood Money and Broken Promises

"They held me down in the wet grass while the fire started," Daniel’s voice trembled with a rage that transcended his failing body. "They dragged me away into the woods. Julian’s fixer threatened to take Lily from me. He told me that if I ever spoke a single word to the police, if I ever told anyone that Julian was behind the wheel, they would frame me for the accident, send me to prison for twenty years, and have Child Protective Services put Lily into the state system—where Julian would make sure she was lost forever."
Daniel wiped his face with a trembling hand on screen.
"My wife had died giving birth to Lily. Lily was all I had left in the world. I was a coward, Sarah. I let them threaten me into silence. I watched from the shadows as the Vance family’s legal empire bought the police chief, doctored the evidence, and scrubbed Julian’s name entirely from the public records. Julian went back to his penthouse. Mark and Chloe went into the ground."
The camera lens shook as Daniel leaned back, coughing violently into a tissue.
"For two years, the guilt ate me alive. I couldn't sleep. Every time I looked at Lily’s face, I saw Chloe’s dying eyes. And then... the universe gave me my sentence. Stage IV pancreatic cancer. Inoperable. A death sentence wrapped in a six-month countdown."
A cold, grim smile flickered across Daniel’s pale lips on the screen.
"When the doctor gave me the news, I didn't cry. I felt a profound, beautiful relief. Because I knew what I had to do. Julian thought he had won. He thought that by putting a five-million-dollar trust in my name—hush money disguised as family inheritance—he had bought my eternal silence. But I didn't touch a cent of his money. Instead, I hired private investigators to find the survivor of that night."
"I found you, Sarah."
"I watched you for months. I saw that you were barely surviving. You were cleaning toilets at St. Jude’s, living in a broken apartment, drowning in medical debts that Mark’s insurance didn't cover. And I realized something monstrous... and perfect."
"I couldn't bring your family back. But I could destroy Julian, and I could give you everything Julian tried to steal."
Daniel pointed a frail, skeletal finger toward the camera.
"I transferred the entire five million dollars of Julian’s hush money into an irrevocable offshore trust in your name, Sarah. The house you are sitting in right now is deeded to you completely. Julian cannot touch it. But more than that... I knew that money would mean nothing to a mother who had lost her daughter. You needed a reason to live. And Lily needed someone who possessed a heart large enough to protect her from the monsters in my family."
"I manipulated you," Daniel confessed, his eyes locked dead onto mine. "I played the dying father because I knew your grief would make you vulnerable to a child in need. I made you fall in love with our little family. I made you Lily’s legal mother. Because as long as you are her legal guardian, Julian Vance cannot claim custody of her to seize the five million dollars that was stolen from your dead husband."
The video was nearing its final minutes.
"In the folder on that desktop, there is a video file named *Dashcam_Master.mov*. That is the original dashcam footage from the truck. Julian thought his security team burned it. I stole the backup drive from their server before I checked into the hospital. It shows Julian’s face clearly behind the wheel. It shows him doing cocaine forty seconds before impact. It shows him ordering his men to leave your car burning."
Daniel leaned in one last time, his voice dropping to a harsh, final whisper:
"Julian knows the anniversary of my death was today. He knows that according to my trust, you gain full unconditional access to the funds and the estate twenty-four hours from now. He is coming for you, Sarah. He will try to buy you out, or he will try to take Lily to invalidate the trust."
"Do not run. Fight him. Put him in a cage."
The video ended abruptly, cutting to black.
The silence of the study was deafening. My heart hammered against my ribcage like a war drum.
*Five million dollars of blood money.*
*The murderer of my daughter walked free in a multi-million-dollar penthouse downtown.*
And right outside that study door, sleeping in her bedroom, was the daughter of the man who had concealed the truth for two years—a little girl who had called me "Mom" every morning for three hundred and sixty-five days.

Suddenly, the harsh chime of the front doorbell sliced through the dark house.
