Chapter 8 - The Hunt Closes In

"If I lose everything," Marcus breathed, his eyes bloodshot, his finger tightening on the trigger, "then you don't get to walk away with it, you little parasite!"
*CRACK.*
The gunshot sounded like thunder inside the cathedral.
I didn't flinch. I didn't drop.
Father Dominic had lunged forward with a heavy brass processional cross, slamming the base of the sacred relic into Marcus’s shoulder. The pistol discharged into the stone floor, the ricochet gouging a violent trench into the marble flags and spraying stone dust across my boots.
Marcus stumbled, crying out in pain, but his momentum carried him forward. He tackled Father Dominic to the ground, his teeth bared like a rabid animal, his gun swinging back toward my chest.
I dropped the heavy Pelican case directly onto his outstretched wrist.
Thirty pounds of reinforced titanium and high-density components crashed down upon the brittle bones of Marcus’s hand with a sickening *crunch*.
Marcus screamed, a high, pathetic wail of agony, dropping the pistol onto the marble floor.
I kicked the gun away. It slid across the slick stone, disappearing into the dark entrance of the crypt.
Marcus lay on the cathedral floor, clutching his shattered wrist against his chest, writhing in the broken debris of the oak doors. His camel-hair coat was torn, smeared with centuries-old church dust and his own blood. He looked up at me, his face pale and slick with cold sweat, tears of pain leaking from his eyes.
"You... you're a monster," he gasped, his voice trembling. "My father was insane. He ruined our family for a woman who didn't even want him!"
"My mother loved him," I said, standing over him, looking down into the face of the man who had tormented her life from the shadows. "She walked away from him because she refused to let his family destroy her dignity. But you? You destroyed your own family for money that was never truly yours."
Outside the cathedral, the sudden, deafening wail of sirens shattered the night.
Red and blue light strobed through the stained-glass windows, turning the sanctuary into a kaleidoscope of brilliant, flashing crimson and cobalt. Dozens of police cruisers, followed by the heavy, armored transport trucks of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, screeched to a halt along Fourth Avenue.
Arthur Sterling hadn't just relied on me. Before his capture, the brilliant old lawyer had scheduled an automated digital transmission to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. The moment Marcus’s mercenaries breached Saint Michael’s Cathedral, the geofenced transponders inside Arthur’s briefcase had alerted the federal strike team.
Dozens of federal agents in tactical gear poured through the shattered portico, their weapons drawn, their voices commanding absolute surrender:
*"FBI! Nobody move! Hands where we can see them!"*
Marcus closed his eyes, his head slumping back against the cold stone flags of the sanctuary. The empire of Marcus Vance had fallen, not in a boardroom, not on the high seas, but on the floor of a church he had sought to desecrate.
An agent rushed forward, kicking the remaining debris away and securing Marcus in heavy steel handcuffs.
A tall woman in a sharp navy suit with an FBI director's badge stepped through the doorway, her eyes sweeping over the shattered sanctuary before landing squarely on me.
"Nora Vance?" she asked, her voice professional, firm, yet tinged with profound respect.
"Yes," I answered quietly.
"I am Special Agent Miller, Financial Crimes Division," she said, flashing her credentials. "Arthur Sterling provided us with your encrypted dossier three hours ago. We have the hospital footage. We have the bank manifests. You are safe now, Mrs. Vance."
I looked at the woman, then down at the soda can pull tab on my finger.
The adrenaline that had sustained me through the freezing rain, the drainage canal, and the gunfire suddenly evaporated, leaving behind an ocean of bone-deep exhaustion.

"The files are all here," I said, pointing to the glowing terminal on the table. "Everything Julian wanted you to know."
