Chapter 5 - The Web Unravels

Before Vincent’s Gulfstream jet had even touched down in Georgia, the Moretti estate in Chicago had descended into absolute chaos.
In the subterranean vault beneath the mansion, Dante had spent the last six hours executing Vincent’s explicit parting orders: *Turn the house upside down.*
Dante walked into the lavish sitting room on the second floor, flanked by four armed capos. Sophia Reynolds was sitting on an antique chaise lounge, trembling uncontrollably as she clutched a glass of white wine. Beside her, Emily Moretti was pacing the floor, her phone pressed frantically to her ear.
"Put the phone down, Emily," Dante said, his voice flat and dangerous.
Emily whipped around, her eyes flashing with defensive rage. "How dare you speak to me like that! I am a Moretti! You work for my family, Dante! When Vincent gets back—"
"Vincent isn't coming back for you," Dante interrupted, stepping into the center of the room. He tossed a thick, transparent evidence bag onto the glass coffee table between them.
Inside the bag were three burner phones, a bank ledger from a private institution in the Cayman Islands, and a sealed medical report bearing the seal of a private fertility clinic in Detroit.
Sophia’s glass slipped from her fingers, shattering violently on the Persian rug. The pale wine soaked into the fabric like an expanding bloodstain.
"What... what is that?" Sophia choked out.
"This is the paper trail Vincent was too blinded by guilt to look for three years ago," Dante said, his eyes drilling into Sophia’s pale face. "You see, Sophia, when you showed up on Vincent’s doorstep three years ago claiming your husband beat you and left you penniless, Claire was the one who welcomed you into this home. Claire fed you, protected you, and gave you a sanctuary."
Dante leaned down, resting his knuckles on the table, towering over the terrified woman.
"But you weren't penniless, were you? You had accumulated nearly two million dollars in gambling debts across illegal casinos in Atlantic City. Debts owned by the Lucchese family." Dante glanced at Emily. "And Emily here was terrified because she had secretly co-signed those debts to fund her failed boutique chain in Manhattan."
Emily took a step back, her chest heaving, her hands flying to her mouth. "Dante, please... you don't understand the pressure I was under—"
"Shut up," Dante snapped. "The two of you concocted a brilliant little scheme. If Sophia could replace Claire as Vincent’s wife, Vincent’s wealth would wipe out your debts overnight. All you needed was a wedge to break Claire’s spirit."
Dante tapped the evidence bag containing the medical report.
"Three years ago, Sophia went to that private clinic in Detroit. She had an intrauterine insemination procedure using frozen genetic material from her ex-husband. She was already four weeks pregnant when she walked through the doors of this mansion, pretending to be sick from stress."
Sophia began to hyperventilate, tears streaming down her face, ruining her makeup. "No... no, Vincent loved me! He always loved me!"
"Vincent was nostalgic for a fantasy from his youth," Dante countered ruthlessly. "And you manipulated that nostalgia. You staged that breakdown in the hospital room. Emily deliberately left the door cracked because she saw Claire walking down the hallway with your favorite pastries. You staged that entire confession knowing Claire was listening."
Dante stood up straight, his face an impenetrable mask of disgust.
"You broke a loyal woman’s heart. You drove the Boss’s pregnant wife away into the dark. And for three years, you let Vincent raise another man’s child, believing he had sacrificed his soul for his true love."
"Where is Vincent?" Emily cried, grabbing Dante’s lapel with both hands. "Dante, please! He’s my brother! You have to tell him I was desperate! He won't kill his own sister!"
Dante gently, but firmly, peeled Emily’s fingers from his jacket.
"Vincent is in Savannah," Dante said quietly. "And when he finishes reading the encrypted file I just uploaded to his tablet, God help the both of you. Because your brother didn't leave Chicago as a businessman. He left as an executioner."
Dante turned to his armed guards. "Lock them in their rooms. Disconnect the landlines, cut the Wi-Fi, and place two men outside every window. If either of them attempts to leave the property, shoot them in the legs."

As Dante walked out of the room, the sound of Sophia’s hysterical wailing and Emily’s desperate pleas echoed down the empty, cold marble corridors—a fitting soundtrack to the crumbling of an empire built on lies.
