Chapter 1 - The Echo of a Stranger

My hand was already gripping the armrest as I prepared to stand, a warm, indulgent smile breaking across my face as I waited for Mason’s name to echo through the cabin. The other passengers around us shifted lazily in their seats, some looking up from their phones, others adjusting their neck pillows, completely indifferent to the impending domestic theater unfolding in row twenty-six.

Then Tyler’s voice returned to the speaker, dropping into a smooth, practiced cadence that hit the air like falling glass.

“Her name is Chloe.”

The smile froze on my lips.

My name is Sarah.

I didn't move. I couldn't move. The blood drained so violently from my head that the cabin interior tilted sideways for a fraction of a second, the overhead safety lights blurring into streaks of pale white and yellow.

Beside me, Mason tugged eagerly on the sleeve of my jacket, his face flushed with uncontainable joy, completely oblivious to the catastrophic wrongness of the syllables that had just vibrated through the PA system.

“Mom, he said it! He’s talking about us!” Mason whispered loudly, leaning out into the aisle so he could wave at the front of the plane. “He’s talking about—wait, why didn't he say Mom?”

I didn't answer him. I couldn't find my voice. My throat felt as though it had been lined with barbed wire.

“Chloe,” Tyler continued, his tone swelling with a sickening, public romanticism I had never once heard directed at me in our nine years of marriage. “You know you’re the co-pilot of my heart. Thank you for flying down to meet me this weekend. Let’s make this trip unforgettable.”

A soft, collective ripple of amusement and polite, manufactured applause murmured through the front rows of the cabin.

In row twenty-six, the world had completely stopped turning.

My fingers, which had been clutching my phone so tightly the plastic casing was digging into my palm, began to shake uncontrollably. My mind raced backward through the last six months, cataloging every late-night flight schedule, every unexpected overnight layover in Chicago, every time Tyler had kissed my forehead at the front door and promised he was doing it all for our family.

Chloe.

The name echoed in my skull like a funeral bell.

May you like

“Mom?” Mason’s small hand grabbed mine, his joyful anticipation abruptly crumbling into raw, childish confusion as he looked up into my face. His wide, innocent eyes searched mine for an explanation, finding only a blank mask of absolute terror. “Mom... why aren't you smiling? Who is Chloe?”
