Chapter 3 - The Ghost Bride

The words hung in the humid, vapor-choked air of the sub-basement like poison gas.
Evan surged forward on instinct, pure predatory rage blinding his judgment, but Claire’s arm shot across his chest like an iron bar, driving him back against the concrete wall.
"Down!" she hissed.
A split second later, the sharp, concussive *CRACK* of a suppressed firearm shattered the hiss of the steam pipes. A 9mm slug punched through the sheet-metal ductwork two inches above Evan’s right ear, showering his tuxedo in sparks and insulation fibers.
Behind them, Peter Cho didn't hesitate. Ignoring Claire’s previous warnings, the security chief kicked the heavy blast door all the way open, dropped to one knee on the threshold, and fired three controlled double-taps down the central aisle with his custom SIG Sauer. The deafening roar of unsuppressed gunfire inside the enclosed concrete chamber was catastrophic, vibrating through Evan’s teeth and skull.
"Cease fire! Cease fire, you idiot!" Claire roared, spinning around and slamming her palm against Peter’s gun arm, forcing the muzzle toward the deck. "You hit a high-pressure line and you drown us in three-hundred-degree steam!"
The corridor ahead went deathly still. The muzzle flashes had illuminated fleeting shadows slipping through the rear maintenance hatch—a silhouette in a dark windbreaker dragging a smaller figure wrapped in a white silk bridal undergarment.
"They're heading toward the drainage sluice," Claire said, her voice dropping into an icy, calculating cadence as she checked the corridor with her Maglite. "The sluice leads out to Slip 14 at the commercial wharf. That’s outside hotel property. My jurisdiction ends at the water line."
"I don't give a damn about your jurisdiction," Evan breathed, his face smeared with grease, his bowtie hanging loose against his sweat-soaked collar. He looked at Peter. "Call the yacht. Tell Captain Vance to bring the *Aegis* around to the mouth of the commercial canal. If any vessel tries to clear that slip, run them down. Ram them."
"Evan, wait," Claire interrupted, kneeling near a puddle of water beneath a junction box.
Lying face down in the shallow, oily grime was a disposable burner phone. Its screen was cracked, but the display was blinking frantically with an incoming, unsaved call.
Claire picked it up using a pen from her pocket, toggling the speakerphone button before holding it out between them.
She nodded at Evan. *Talk.*
Evan took a ragged breath, fighting to steady his voice. He pressed his thumb against the speaker. "Grace?"
A choked, terrified sob burst through the static-laced connection.
*"Evan... oh God, Evan, please don't come down here..."*
Grace’s voice was fractured, trembling with an agony that Evan had never heard in the two years they had shared a bed. She wasn't speaking with the calculated coldness of a traitor. She sounded like an animal trapped in a snare.
"Grace, listen to me," Evan said, his voice dropping into the low, commanding tone he used to steady panic-stricken executives. "Where are they taking you? Who has you?"
*"It’s not about Daniel’s debts, Evan!"* she wept, the sound of rushing water and a rumbling marine diesel engine roaring in the background of her call. *"Daniel found the files... in your father’s old safety deposit box at Beacon Hill Trust. The files about the 2018 shipyard collapse! The Lee family didn't just lose money on that project, Evan... your father murdered the union inspectors! Daniel tried to sell them back to your mother to pay his debts, but she sent Peter to kill him!"*
Evan’s blood turned to slush in his veins. He slowly turned his head to look at Peter Cho, who was standing five feet away in the shadows of the doorway.
Peter didn't lower his gun. His expression had emptied of all deference, leaving behind the dead, flat gaze of a professional cleaner whose cover had just been blown open.
*"Your mother set this up, Evan!"* Grace screamed over the phone, her voice tearing with desperation. *"She knew Daniel was meeting me here to hand over the flash drive! She’s using these men to wipe Daniel out—and she told them that if I knew the truth, I couldn't be allowed to walk down that aisle alive!"*
The call severed with a sharp burst of static.
In the subterranean silence of the Crown Harbor Hotel, the only sound remaining was the slow, deliberate click of Peter Cho’s thumb thumbing back the hammer of his sidearm.

"Put the phone down, Mr. Lee," Peter said softly.
