Chapter 5 - The Ledger of the Damned

By midnight, the base had transformed into a fortress under federal siege. The Department of the Navy’s Inspector General, accompanied by thirty armed agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) and a tactical contingent from the FBI, descended upon Coronado.

The three zodiac boats had been seized before they could hit the open ocean. Inside the waterproof cases were not only the stolen thermite charges and uncertified dive systems, but an encrypted military-grade laptop containing what investigators quickly dubbed *The Ledger of the Damned*.

In the base command center, Admiral Vance stood before a wall of high-definition monitors. As forensic specialists decrypted the hard drive, a horrific web of illicit transactions unfolded on the screen: offshore accounts in Panama, fraudulent testing logs that had cost three trainees their lives over a five-year span, and direct kickbacks wired to shell companies registered under the name of Brock Sullivan and several high-ranking defense lobbyists.

Sullivan sat in the corner of the room, strapped to a tactical chair, guarded by two towering DEVGRU operators. His uniform was torn, his hair was matted with sweat and sea salt, and the reality of his total destruction was finally settling in like a terminal diagnosis.

The encrypted hotline phone on the main console buzzed with an urgent crimson light.

Admiral Vance picked it up, pressed speaker, and let the voice reverberate through the briefing room.

*“Marcus! This is Senator Sullivan!”* The voice was harsh, authoritarian, and dripping with panicked fury. *“What in God’s name is happening on your base?! I’m hearing my son has been detained by rogue operators! I want this exercise terminated right now! Do you hear me? I sit on the appropriations committee, Vance! I will gut your naval budget down to the bone!”*

Admiral Vance looked toward me, offering the microphone.

I stepped up to the console and keyed the transponder.

“Senator Sullivan,” I said, my voice cutting through the speaker like dry ice.

There was a sudden, jarring pause on the other end of the line. *“Who is this? Where is Admiral Vance? Put my son on the phone!”*

“Your son is facing twenty-five counts of military fraud, three counts of criminally negligent manslaughter, and two counts of federal treason for the unlawful sale of military equipment to unvetted shell companies,” I stated with absolute clarity.

*“You insolent bastard! Who the hell do you think you’re talking to?!”* the Senator bellowed. *“I don’t care what rank you are! You’re a dog in uniform, and I will destroy your life!”*

“My callsign is Archangel, Senator,” I said calmly.

The silence that followed was total.

On the other end of the phone, two thousand miles away in Washington D.C., the Senator’s breathing hitched. The arrogance evaporated into a horrified, breathless gasp.

*“Archangel…? No… that operation was scrubbed… you were retired…”*

“I was never retired,” I replied. “I was reallocated to ensure that corrupt men like you don't sell the blood of American soldiers for profit. Your home in Virginia is currently being surrounded by federal marshals with an unsealed indictment bearing your name, Senator. Your son didn’t just fail his command tonight. He dragged your entire dynasty into the dirt.”

I cut the line with the press of a button.

In the corner of the room, Brock Sullivan slumped forward against his restraints, weeping quietly in total despair.
