Chapter 18 - Evelyn’s Confession

Daniel pressed the engraved code from Lily’s silver rattle into the electronic keypad mounted into the stone beside the vault. With a heavy, pneumatic hiss that sounded like a dying breath, the heavy steel door swung inward.

Inside, illuminated by strip LED lighting powered by an emergency generator, was a subterranean office that had remained untouched for decades. Filing cabinets lined the walls, each marked with years spanning from 1975 to the present.

On the central desk sat an old cassette recorder with a handwritten note taped to the plastic casing: *For Daniel, when the facade fails.*

With trembling fingers, Daniel pressed play.

The scratchy, unmistakable voice of his late father, Arthur Bennett, filled the cold chamber.

"Daniel, my boy... if you are listening to this, Marcus has returned, and Evelyn has either failed or paid the ultimate price for our vanity. What we did to Sarah Vance was an atrocity born of pride. We wanted an heir so desperately that we allowed Marcus to build an empire of ghosts to hide your acquisition. But what Marcus never understood was that I kept the master ledger."

Arthur took a ragged, wheezing breath on the recording.

"The real ledger isn't numbers, Daniel. It’s genetic markers. Marcus didn't just steal infants. He used our private clinics to conduct unauthorized experiments in synthetic genealogies—creating paper children to serve as living keys to multi-billion-dollar sovereign wealth accounts. And Sarah Vance wasn't an innocent bystander."

Claire gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.

"Sarah was Marcus’s lead geneticist," Arthur’s recorded voice whispered. "She engineered you, Daniel. And she engineered Lily."
