Chapter 7 - The Blueprint of Betrayal

I froze with my boot planted on the bottom riser of the grand staircase, my muscles coiled like spring steel, every instinct screaming to pull the trigger and tear through the house.

"You touch her, and I will carve your heart out with a dull knife," I whispered, my voice dropping into a register so dark it barely sounded human.

The stranger chuckled softly, his boots clicking rhythmically against the hardwood as he walked closer. He didn't seem intimidated by the threat of a mafia boss; he acted like a man who held all the pieces to a puzzle I was only just beginning to see.

"Save the tough-guy routine for your warehouse managers, Vincent," the man said smoothly, stopping two paces behind me. "My name is Silas Vance. Does the last name ring a bell? No? Let me jog your memory. Twenty-two years ago, you wiped out the Kane syndicate on the South Side. You thought you left no survivors."

I spun around, keeping my pistol low and level. "Arthur Kane's youngest boy. You were a toddler."

"I was twelve," Silas corrected, his face hardening, the playful smirk vanishing to reveal a deep, festering hatred. "I watched my father bleed out on our kitchen floor while your men ransacked our safes. I spent the next two decades learning how to dismantle an empire without ever firing a shot in anger. I didn't want to kill you, Vincent. Death is too quick. I wanted you to watch everything you loved rot from the inside out."

"And Elena?" I spat out, my grip tightening on the pistol grip. "Was she part of your vendetta?"

"Elena?" Silas let out a dry, humorless laugh. "Elena is just a woman with expensive tastes and a mountain of gambling debts she accumulated in Macau. I simply provided her with the formula, funded her offshore accounts, and told her what to feed your daughter. She thought she was securing a divorce settlement with a heavily padded trust fund. She had no idea she was just my instrument of execution."

The sheer scale of the manipulation hit me like a physical blow. My wife hadn't conceived this nightmare; she had been recruited, bought, and manipulated by a ghost from my past seeking absolute, systematic destruction.

"Where is she?" I demanded.

"Gone," Silas said casually, checking his watch. "She packed her designer bags ten minutes ago. Right now, she's boarding a private charter out of Fulton County Airport. By morning, she'll be halfway to the Swiss Alps, leaving you here to deal with the wreckage."

Silas took a step back into the shadows of the corridor, his finger resting lightly on his own weapon.

"If you want to save Lila's sight, Vincent, you're going to have to make a choice," Silas called out, his voice echoing as he backed toward the rear service door. "Drop your gun and let me walk out of here, or go upstairs and find your daughter injected with a fatal dose. You have ten seconds."
