Chapter 5 - The Legal Fortress

While Nolan was pacing the white sand beaches of Key West, trying desperately to reach a lawyer who wouldn't demand an immediate five-thousand-dollar retainer, Audrey Bellamy was sitting in the corner office of Vance, Sterling & Cross on the fourth floor of the historic Jackson Building in downtown Asheville.
Lila was sleeping peacefully in a Moses basket beside Audrey’s chair, wrapped in a fresh blanket of pale gray cashmere. Audrey wore a tailored navy wool suit, her dark hair pulled back into an immaculate chignon, looking every bit the ruthless architectural heiress her father had spent twenty years training.
Across the desk, Marcus Vance slid an eighty-page document bound with dark blue cardstock across the mahogany.
“The divorce complaint has been filed,” Marcus said calmly. “Cause of action: abandonment, constructive eviction, and marital fraud. We have simultaneously filed for sole legal and physical custody of Lila, with supervised visitation contingent upon psychological evaluation and complete restitution of embezzled funds.”
Audrey didn’t touch the papers. She looked out the window at the distant, smoky ridges of the mountains. “Did the judge grant the temporary restraining order?”
“Judge Holloway signed it without blinking,” Elena Ruiz said, stepping forward with a signed copy. “The order explicitly prohibits Nolan, Beverly, or Trevor Bellamy from coming within one thousand yards of you, Lila, your residence, or the offices of Bellamy Design-Build. If Nolan sets one foot on the property at Hemlock Ridge, he will be in direct contempt of court and subject to immediate arrest.”
“What about the mortgage acceleration?” Audrey asked.
Marcus chuckled softly. “Nolan’s individual credit line has been liquidated. When his Wells Fargo accounts were attached yesterday, his automatic mortgage payments bounced. Because he violated the restrictive covenant of the deed of trust by physically locking you out, the full accelerated balance of $1.4 million is now due within forty-eight hours. Since he obviously cannot pay it, we initiated non-judicial foreclosure proceedings under the power-of-sale clause.”
“When is the auction date?”
“We don’t need an auction, Audrey,” Marcus explained. “Under North Carolina trust law, the Halliday Trust holds the first-position deed of trust. As the primary lienholder, the trust simply executes a strict deed in lieu of foreclosure to reclaim sole legal title. By noon tomorrow, Nolan Bellamy’s name will be completely scrubbed from the Buncombe County Register of Deeds. Legally speaking, he was never an owner. He was merely an occupant who defaulted on his obligations.”
Audrey looked down at her hands. Her wedding ring—a three-carat emerald-cut diamond set in platinum—was no longer on her finger. She had placed it in a small velvet box inside Marcus’s safe that morning.
“And the Porsche?” Audrey asked.
“The lease on the Porsche Cayenne was held through the corporate fleet account,” Elena said with a small smile. “Since the corporate account was frozen and terminated, the leasing agency, Porsche Financial Services, was notified of an unauthorized out-of-state transfer of corporate property. A repo order was issued yesterday evening.”
Audrey allowed herself the first genuine smile she had felt in weeks. It was small, sharp, and cold as a razor blade.
“Elena,” Audrey said. “Where is the Porsche parked right now?”
“According to the GPS transponder on the vehicle,” Elena glanced at her tablet, “it is currently parked in the long-term parking lot of the Key West International Airport.”

“Notify the local recovery agent in Key West,” Audrey said quietly. “Tell them the vehicle is available for immediate repossession. Today.”
