Chapter 39 - The Fuse

Nobody moved.

For several seconds, the only sound was the faint electrical hum from the hallway.

Then Jonathan said:

“Absolutely not.”

Elise looked at him.

“You don't understand.”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“A grave is a grave.”

“Not this one.”

Rachel took the silver key.

“What's underneath?”

Elise shook her head.

“I never went inside.”

“You knew it existed.”

“Yes.”

“Who did?”

“Thomas.”

Gabriel looked at me.

“This is what he was trying to reach.”

I stared at the key.

A family cemetery.

A hidden vault.

A founder still alive.

None of it felt possible.

Then Noah spoke.

“My mother wasn't afraid of Eleanor.”

Elise looked at him.

“She was afraid of what's beneath the grave.”

I turned.

“Why?”

“Because it contains the original ledger.”

Martin stopped breathing.

“The ledger?”

“The first record.”

Rachel stared.

“Of the network?”

“Of everyone who belonged to it.”

Jonathan said:

“That would be enough to destroy them.”

Elise shook her head.

“Not destroy.”

She looked at me.

“Identify.”

Before I could ask what she meant, every phone in the room began vibrating.

At the same time.

Mark looked at his.

His face changed.

“What?”

I checked mine.

There was a message.

From the same unknown number.

FAMILY COURT PETITION FILED.

My stomach dropped.

Rachel opened the attachment.

Her face went pale.

“What is it?”

“A petition.”

“For what?”

She looked at me.

“Emergency seizure.”

“Of what?”

“Your assets.”

I laughed bitterly.

“I don't have any.”

“You do now.”

“The trust.”

“Yes.”

Mark looked at the document.

“Who's filing?”

Rachel didn't answer.

I took the phone.

Eleanor.

The petition claimed Hannah Vale had knowingly participated in financial fraud tied to an underground corporate network.

I stared.

“There is a hearing tomorrow.”

Rachel nodded.

“And she has sworn statements.”

“From whom?”

Rachel scrolled.

Martin.

Daniel.

Elias.

My heart stopped.

“Elias?”

He looked at me.

“I never signed that.”

Rachel checked.

“It isn't a signature.”

“What is it?”

“A digital authorization.”

Martin stared.

“It was generated by the trust.”

“What?”

“It has enough biometric information to make it appear authentic.”

I looked at my hands.

“My blood.”

Martin nodded.

“Your blood triggered the system.”

Mark swore.

“So Eleanor can make Hannah look guilty.”

Rachel's voice was quiet.

“Yes.”

Then another document appeared.

Custody petition.

I stared.

“Custody?”

Rachel nodded.

“Emergency guardianship of Hannah Vale and Noah Carter.”

Noah stiffened.

“By Eleanor.”

“Yes.”

I looked at Elise.

“You knew this could happen.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you stop it?”

“Because I needed you to come to the archive.”

“To activate the trust.”

“Yes.”

I felt betrayed again.

“You used me.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I chose the only path left.”

“You chose a path that put me in danger.”

“Yes.”

Mark stepped forward.

“She should have known.”

Elise looked at him.

“I agree.”

That stopped me.

“I am not asking you to forgive me.”

She looked directly at me.

“I am asking you to survive long enough to expose the truth.”

A noise came from outside.

Car doors.

Several.

Jonathan moved toward the window.

“We have company.”

Rachel checked the cameras.

“Federal agents.”

Martin looked at the door.

“They shouldn't be here.”

Then the intercom activated.

“Open the door.”

Rachel froze.

“That isn't federal.”

“Who is it?”

She listened.

Then looked at me.

“Eleanor.”

Mark moved beside me.

Jonathan raised his weapon.

Elise whispered:

“She found us.”

The door unlocked.

Eleanor entered.

She was alone.

No gun visible.

No guards.

She held a file folder.

“I came to make you an offer.”

Gabriel stepped in front of Elise.

“You're not touching her.”

Eleanor looked at him.

“I don't need to.”

She turned to me.

“You have until midnight.”

“For what?”

“To sign the refusal.”

I stared.

“And if I don't?”

She placed the file on the table.

“Your mother's medical records become evidence.”

I opened it.

Every page was there.

Hospital records.

Psychological evaluations.

Medication.

Statements.

Some were real.

Most were fabricated.

But they were convincing.

“She has been labeled unstable.”

Elise's face changed.

Eleanor nodded.

“That was the plan.”

Mark grabbed my hand.

“She wants to discredit her.”

“No.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“I want to discredit Hannah.”

She looked at me.

“Because if the court believes you are unstable, the trust cannot rely on your testimony.”

Rachel stepped forward.

“We can challenge that.”

“Eventually.”

Eleanor smiled.

“After tomorrow's hearing.”

I stared.

“You've been planning this for years.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

She looked at Noah.

“Because I watched this family destroy itself over a promise made before any of you were born.”

She looked back at me.

“I thought controlling the truth was better than releasing it.”

“That isn't your decision.”

“No.”

She glanced toward Elise.

“It was hers.”

Elise lowered her head.

Eleanor moved closer.

“Ask her what happened to the third child.”

Silence.

Noah looked at his mother.

“Third child?”

Elise's face went white.

I stared at her.

“Mom?”

She couldn't speak.

Gabriel stepped forward.

“Elise.”

She looked at him.

Eleanor smiled.

“Tell them.”

Elise whispered:

“There was another pregnancy.”

My heart stopped.

“No.”

“It wasn't a child.”

Rachel looked confused.

“What does that mean?”

Elise shook her head.

“The third pregnancy was before you.”

She looked at me.

“I lost the baby.”

I exhaled.

“So there was never a third child.”

Eleanor looked satisfied.

“No.”

She picked up the file.

“But someone has been using that identity for years.”

Martin suddenly looked at the computer.

A new alert appeared.

He froze.

“That's impossible.”

“What?”

He looked at me.

“Someone just logged into the archive.”

“With whose identity?”

Martin whispered:

“Hannah's.”

Rachel stepped toward the screen.

“No.”

Then another line appeared.

USER AUTHENTICATED.

NOAH CARTER.

Noah stared.

“I didn't log in.”

A third line appeared.

ELISE CARTER.

My mother stepped backward.

“I didn't either.”

Martin looked terrified.

“Then someone has all three biometric profiles.”

The lights went out.

Again.

A final message appeared on the monitor.

WELCOME HOME, CHILDREN.

Then the door behind Eleanor locked.

May you like

She turned.

For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.
